2 year old paint x thoroughbred filly

Breed: Grade Thoroughbred x APHA
Age: 2 years (DOB: 2-24-06)
Gender: Filly
Height: 15.3
Horse's current job and future intended uses: Currently: Nothing, she's a baby. Future: Who knows, whatever she's good at, lol. I'll try her at dressage, and if she doesn't do well at that then I'll try jumping, and if not that then she'll probably end up just being a pleasure ride. She does well with cows and such, but I dont like western, it's just not for me.
Additional Information: She's my baby. Her dam is a rescue, so we don't have her papers, her sire is an APHA halter horse. Her bloodlines are here: http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/a+jazzy+brew

How to Critique Horses - read this if you want to comment
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are the rules about how to critique horses in the conformation clinic. Please check back here as this forum progresses since we will be making updates as we go along.

1. Be honest but friendly.
All horses have flaws -- you can certainly point them out. BUT, do not say things in a way that could be construed as rude or overly negative.
Keep all comments focused on the horse. Do not say anything critical about the owner.

2. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Just like how all horses have flaws, they all have good points. If you have something negative to say, be sure to also include a positive comment.
Keep things friendly -- give your comments the way you would if a good friend asked you for your opinion.

3. If you don't have anything conformation-related to say, please PM the horse's owner instead of replying in here.
People posting in this area are looking for conformation-related responses. Even if you're not well versed in conformation, please don't be shy about trying to critique the horse or ask questions about his/her conformation. But, since this is the conformation clinic, please make sure your response does pertain to conformation! Comments such as "he sure is pretty!" should be made via PM if you aren't also commenting on the horse's conformation.

4. People WILL say things you disagree with.
Keep your comments focused on your own ideas, and not reactions to other people's posts.
If you think you'll be bothered by seeing comments that you think are "wrong" - then don't visit this forum!!!
It is not your job to convince everyone that your opinion is correct. Say what you believe and let others come to their own conclusions.

If people have trouble following these rules, we will make critiquing by invitation only.

She looks like a good western horse Seriously though she looks like she could do okay in lower level dressage. But then again I ain't no expert

She's nice; i really like this filly. I personally think she would best be suited for westren events; but she might do good in some dressage. She appears to have high withers; which I don't think you want in WP, but you don't like wp so that's not a problem....These are just my opions, though, I don't really know anything factual She'd sure make a pretty trail horse, if she doesn't work out

She's very nice and balanced through body, and has a beautiful feminine head and neck.

HOWEVER, her ankles scare me. They are very long in front, and seem upright in the back. I would be worried about getting her to push off her hindquarter, and how long she'd be sound for something like jumping.

This is a very attractive young filly. Certainly looks her breeding and has an overall eye appeal. With that being said, this is what I see...

She has a cute young thoroughbred shaped head, definitley says filly to me. Wide set eyes with attentive and attractive ears. I find her slightly thick in the throat latch but not uncommon for her growing age. Good connectivity of her head to her neck, whick is of good length, shape, size and flows nicely into her body. Perhaps a bit high withered, back appears to be coupled a tad short, but I think alot is age. Nice deep heartgirth and underline. Nice rounded hip, just ever so slight with a bump appearance, nice croup and tail set. Nice shoulder angle, shows reachability. Light bone and muscle appearance to her front end but fits her. I find her just ever so slightly behind the knee. I also, see inset to the knee joints which is something I would watch as she continues growing. Good bone length and they appear clean. She is long in the pasterns which puts her behind the hoof on the front end, and appears slightly turned out. Hooves up front appear to be of good size and shape. Again, nice size and shape to hip, it balances her long frame. Nice deep stifle which again shows that ability to reach underneath. Hocks look clean, appear tight and upright. Cannons are of good length, pasterns a bit shorter in appearance in rear with good angle. Looks ever so slightly cow hocked with a good foot.

All in all a nice looking cross. She still has lots of growing and I think she will fill out nicely for you. Dressage is good for all horses, but I see this girl moving well in English Pleasure or HUS.

I think she is stunning. I can see her in an english saddle or blazing the trails. Is she black/white or greying out? Looks roanish with the white hairs and grey in the flank area, so I wasnt sure what color she is.

What a pretty baby! She is a looker - love the first picture of her at a trot! She has a nice feminine thoroughbred head with an intelligent eye. Nice thin neck that may tie in just a bit low, but she clearly carries herself well as the first picture demonstrates. She is doing a lot of growing - I wouldn't push too hard to ride her at this young age. She has long fine fetlocks and is inset at both front knees (slightly knock-kneed) be sure your farrier is watching her carefully. She is also slighly cow-hocked (splay-footed) in back - careful trimming can straighten her without too much strain on her joints. I like her short back - I think it's the QH in her. I'm not experienced in jumping horses - but she would look nice in Jr. Western Pleasure (I know that's not 'your thing' LOL!!!) or as a Hunter under Saddle (flat classes). Overall she is very pleasing to view and seems to have a great personality. A very nice young mare.

Hi Krickette!

First off, she is very pretty! Nice color & kind eye... to me, her body SCREAMS thoroughbred jumper, and I'm partial to those! I

t's so hard to critique 2yo's without standing there looking at them, though... they're so gangly at that age and its near impossible to judge how their back-ends will end up... lol.

Here's my critique:

1. Her head & neck look nice; once she gets into serious training and learns to flex from the poll and round out, she's going to get that nice top-line which will make her neck flow more smoothly into her wither and that will fill her front end out to perfection.

2. She looks a bit short in the back. Her movement isnt as sustained or "long" back there as it is in the front, so you'll need to work on stretching excersizes to get her to engage her hind end so it's not coming so far underneath her on the flat. That will also help with the "bump" on her crop. They start getting muscle there and it just rounds out the whole package! I realize that balance is something young horses have to learn, but it looks like she's incredibly stiff right now.

3. STOP RIDING HER and start working on lunging and flat movement instead. She looked incredibly agitated when you were on her until someone came up and made her follow. Her back end was tucked under, that tail was a-swishin' and I was white-knuckled waiting for something bad to happen; and you without your helmet on! Shame shame! PS> that was intended as a good natured swipe... please dont think I'm trying to be a monster. I'm horrible sometimes and dont wear my helmet when it's scorching hot...

4. Her legs look decent; she is a bit splayed and, as advised, will need farrier work to help her bones & muscles grow correctly, but again... that CAN be fixed due to the fact that she's young and still has growing to do! I wouldnt expect her to do 5' Grand Prix or anything, but she already shows potential for 2'6"-3' with correct training and timing, and that in itself is commendable. Her structure in the front is great and I can see that she'll tuck prettily... but probably favor her front to get her over more than the back. If you can get her to engage back there, her potential to go cleaner rises.

5. All in all, you've got a VERY cute, VERY well put together filly who I believe shows fabulous potential in medium jumpers based on her speed, build and how she looks this very second. But, if you start her correctly, her potential for eventers or hunters is good as well. If you do put her in the hunter ring, you'll need to SLOOOOOW her down. Hunters is won based on a slow, relaxed, pretty ride. Jumpers is fast & clean.

Good luck!!
Eden
