How to Critique Horses - read this if you want to comment

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are the rules about how to critique horses in the conformation clinic. Please check back here as this forum progresses since we will be making updates as we go along.

1. Be honest but friendly.
All horses have flaws -- you can certainly point them out. BUT, do not say things in a way that could be construed as rude or overly negative.
Keep all comments focused on the horse. Do not say anything critical about the owner.

2. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Just like how all horses have flaws, they all have good points. If you have something negative to say, be sure to also include a positive comment.
Keep things friendly -- give your comments the way you would if a good friend asked you for your opinion.

3. If you don't have anything conformation-related to say, please PM the horse's owner instead of replying in here.
People posting in this area are looking for conformation-related responses. Even if you're not well versed in conformation, please don't be shy about trying to critique the horse or ask questions about his/her conformation. But, since this is the conformation clinic, please make sure your response does pertain to conformation! Comments such as "he sure is pretty!" should be made via PM if you aren't also commenting on the horse's conformation.

4. People WILL say things you disagree with.
Keep your comments focused on your own ideas, and not reactions to other people's posts.
If you think you'll be bothered by seeing comments that you think are "wrong" - then don't visit this forum!!!
It is not your job to convince everyone that your opinion is correct. Say what you believe and let others come to their own conclusions.

If people have trouble following these rules, we will make critiquing by invitation only.

First, to answer your question, I do not think she has a ewe neck.

This is what I see confirmationally...

She has a nice head, not super feminine, her jaw I find ever so slightly larger than I would like to see on a mare. She has a nice wide set between curious eyes. There are soft but you can almost see her mind at work. Nice attentive ears. Hard to tell from the pictures but I find maybe her a little thick in the throatlatch. Nice shape to neck, but I would like to see maybe just an inch or two more in length, and it ties in a bit high. This is evident of her breeding and will work well for barrels and or cow horse events. Nice height and shape to her withers that feed into a nice length and width back. Nice deep heartgirth and underline. Lovely big powerful hip, she appears a tad butt high, but could be age and growing. I see perhaps a bit of what I call goose rump, not sure if it is need for a bit more conditioning or confirmation. Although fairly common given her bloodlines. Good set to her croup. Nice shoulder angle to allow for reach, clean front legs although it appears (again could be picture) that she has a slight angle difference to her front pastern but looks to have nice size feet. Left front pastern appears to match shoulder, but right front looks a tad more upright. Both pasterns are short in length but fit overall leg. I like her stifle angle, nice and wide and deep, show the ability to move out as well as get up under herself. I find her hocks a bit upright (common given breeding) but very clean, nice rear cannons and fetlocks, again short pasterns with good angles and a nice foot. Overall I like this young mare, and can see her doing well in barrels or roping, cow horse events in general. I do find her color awesome and she comes from good stock.

Oh my she is gorgeous. Congrats on that mare.

She has a nice, big hip; strong legs, seems correct to me. I dont mind her jaw, I dont like the small head, like a meek halter horse. Not that there is anything wrong with a halter horse (they are gorgeous). But if you are looking for a working horse, she is definatly the bomb. I would love to see some more pics of her. She is flashy, for a solid girl. I see lots of potential. sometimes that tude' really helps out in a working horse. Cause when you need the fire to keep her going or finish the job, you can easily find it. Hows her training coming along?

Oh, and I dont think she has a ewe neck. As she gets towards 4 years, she will put more build to her chest and neck. So the more work you have her do down the road the more she will define & muscle up. Not that she needs help in that department.

dangggggggg, did I already say i love that hip?

I like the higher set neck, but I agree that she may be just a tad goose rumped (although I see this with many QH's). From what I can see, she has a nice shoulder angle and should be a comfy ride!

Great coloring! She has nice straight legs, good bone, and strong back. The only things I would fault her on is that she is a bit coarse in the head and she does have the Little Peppy hip - not necessarily a bad thing as he was a great horse, but just not the prettiest over the top. Oh and the attitude may very well come from him too...but the edgier ones make the best cow horses.

thanks all.. I will take new pics today and post them. I find her to be a bit back at the knee, narrow between the eyes and not enough wither for my liking.. Hopeing the wither comes. other then that, i cant see any other glaring faults, thats why I love critiques-learn something everytime! We had a breakthrough in the training yesterday, she was able to do full circles to the right, listened very well to my aids with not too much attitude... Still really "bulged' going to the left, but there was improvement and her attitude was amazing compared to usual.
just for fun though: this is her as aweanling:

this is her as a yearling on her first day home (super skinny)

Wow, she is so pretty, I had a hard time not drooling on the keyboard. I do not see any glaring faults in her either. She is such a nice mare. Her color is breathtaking. I love those leg stripes. I love the alert look in her eyes. She is certainly full of life. I know these aren't conformation critiques, but I wanted to share anyhow. Thanks for sharing her with us. I love to look at pretty horses.

I love her!

She has a nice hip and back, with powerful hindquarters. Nice straight legs, with good bone to them. Her shoulder is nice and I do not consider her to have a ewe neck. I like her head, but I tend to like a little heartier looking horse. Definitely pretty and strong!

What kind of dun is she considered? We do not have this color in my breed.

I have to go with the rest - a bit goose rumped, and a tad thick in the jaw, short in the neck, but I like her. I think her build will serve you quite well for what you want to do with her..

She almost looks grulla in some of the photos..

At first I thought she looked alittle long backed, but after looking at the other pictures, I take that back.

Other than little nit picky things, I think hs eis nicely conformed. Though she does appear to be a tad butt high

Very pretty color by the way

I think Seerfarm nailed it pretty well. I really like this mare and her breeding. If I would critique her I would say that her head seems a bit coarse for a mare and I do not agree that her croup is too steep, she has a long croup and I like it just the way it is. Nice mare.

just a question: When jazz was a yearling, she looked extremely back at the knee, as she gets older, it seems to be less noticeable, is this something that can change like that?

I cannot add anything more to what seer said. I really like her pedigree and she is built for which ever way that you take her. She is beautiful, and I cannot wait to see what she looks like in her 4th to 5th year. Good luck with her.
