Boots - 10 Year Old AQHA Mare(Pic Heavy)

Breed:Quarter Horse(registered AQHA)
Pedigree: http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/these+boots+can+run
Age: 10
Gender: Mare
Height: 14.3 hands tall
Horse's current job and future intended uses: Trail, All Around - Cow Horse, Reining, Sorting
Additional Information: Boots has been my trail horse for almost 4 years now. She has been used as a barrel horse in the past(before I bought her). I don't really have anywhere to work her right now, but I've got a begginer spin on her and got the backing up down - now we just need to work on our stops and I think we might do ok in a small (tiny) novice reining class. She is a great broodmare and produces super nice foals. Her 07 filly was a Furturity Money Earner.
Pictures: Here are pictures taken yesterday - she is very out of shape and on the obese side..

Didn't get a hind shot yesterday so here's an old one(a few years old)..

***How to Critique Horses - read this if you want to comment

Here are the rules about how to critique horses in the conformation clinic. Please check back here as this forum progresses since we will be making updates as we go along.

1. Be honest but friendly.
All horses have flaws -- you can certainly point them out. BUT, do not say things in a way that could be construed as rude or overly negative.
Keep all comments focused on the horse. Do not say anything critical about the owner.

2. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Just like how all horses have flaws, they all have good points. If you have something negative to say, be sure to also include a positive comment.
Keep things friendly -- give your comments the way you would if a good friend asked you for your opinion.

3. If you don't have anything conformation-related to say, please PM the horse's owner instead of replying in here.
People posting in this area are looking for conformation-related responses. Even if you're not well versed in conformation, please don't be shy about trying to critique the horse or ask questions about his/her conformation. But, since this is the conformation clinic, please make sure your response does pertain to conformation! Comments such as "he sure is pretty!" should be made via PM if you aren't also commenting on the horse's conformation.

4. People WILL say things you disagree with.
Keep your comments focused on your own ideas, and not reactions to other people's posts.
If you think you'll be bothered by seeing comments that you think are "wrong" - then don't visit this forum!!!
It is not your job to convince everyone that your opinion is correct. Say what you believe and let others come to their own conclusions.

If people have trouble following these rules, we will make critiquing by invitation only.

I don't like her back. It's long, and it's swayed. She is also downhill. Her butt is formed strangely, with a little dip between muscles, but that might be fixed by work. She seems to have very flat withers, which would make it hard to fit a saddle to. Her legs are slightly posty and her throatlatch is rather thick. I love how big her feet are!

She is a little long, and def overweight. I'd like to see a deeper hip but overall she is a really pretty mare with a beautiful head and a nice broad chest

She has a very solid build, nice clean legs and a pretty kind face I really like her coloring. Are you sure she is not a dunalino? I have a red dun as well and he has more of redish mane and tail.
I also think her back is too long, but not swayed. She does appear to be mutten withered but once you get her in shape you may find some
Long backed horses don't do very well as reiners, you could show her in small novice shows if you really wanted of course but I don't think it will ever be her cup o tea. She doesn't have a clean throatlach either which will prohibit her from flexing easily at the poll. I think trail classes, HUS, and cattle sorting would me more her game.

I never planned on doing reining for anything more then fun!

She is long backed - I know that - and mutten withered. I have never had such a terrible problem fiding a saddle to fit a horse. I think I'm just going to go to treeless because I think the saddle I have now still doesn't fit her...

I've heard the "dunalino" thing a lot; she is just a very light red dun. Sometimes she does get ever lighter in the summer and looks palomino but she's still a red dun.

Thanks guys!

Anyone else!

I'm no conformation expert, especially with QHs since I'm a gaited horse person, so I don't usually comment on this thread...I just look and drool.lol However, I wanted to offer my opinion on some things on your girl. First I want to say I agree with Tippy that even though her back is a little long for my taste she is not swaybacked and that if she lost some weight you might even discover some withers ( although to me QHs are all a little challenged in that department), I also wanted to say that with the weight loss her throatlatch might clean up a little too. I think this girls only problem is not enough work and too much time with nothing else to do but eat. However, I'd much rather see a fat horse that needs exercise than one that's underfed.

Funny enough my red dun gelding also has no withers(and a long back too) saddle was a pain in the butt, until I finally found some things that work . I use a billy cook reiner and a impact gel saddle pad seems to stay on real good. I used to use the wonpad which is awsome! Your saddle will not move!!
Have you had her color tested? I just did some pedigree research on her and her color comes from her dam but there are a lot of buckskins down there that could have been either dunskins or duns.
