7yo QH Mare (grade)

Before you respond with a critique, please make sure you thoroughly understand the guidelines. If you haven't already done so, please read them here:

http://forum.horsetopia.com/viewtopic.php?t=5936

Breed: QH Grade, with her spots, maybe some POA in there? Her mom was reg. QH, absolutely no idea who her dad was - some stud at an auction barn.

Age: Just turned 7

Gender: Mare

Height: 14.2 (that's a guess, I honestly haven't measured her yet)

Horse's current job and future intended uses: In training for gymkhana and barrels, may consider other disiplines as her training continues, but for this year that's what we'll be doing.

Additional Information: This is actually a horse that I am trade leasing with my old retired horse. She occasionally has some dominance/stubborness issues, but for the most part, those "bad" days are getting fewer and fewer. She seriously lacked self carriage when I got her and did not round up and engage naturally, although had a lot of athletic ability (stopping, turning, etc). Those things are definitely coming along, and she learns fast once she quits trying to see if she can get away with not doing it!

Other than the first few pictures, she is standing on a slight uphill grade.

When she first arrived at my barn (less than 1 month ago):

At her old home (bad pic)

About 2 weeks ago:

Just taken yesterday:

How to Critique Horses - read this if you want to comment

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are the rules about how to critique horses in the conformation clinic. Please check back here as this forum progresses since we will be making updates as we go along.

1. Be honest but friendly.
All horses have flaws -- you can certainly point them out. BUT, do not say things in a way that could be construed as rude or overly negative.
Keep all comments focused on the horse. Do not say anything critical about the owner.

2. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Just like how all horses have flaws, they all have good points. If you have something negative to say, be sure to also include a positive comment.
Keep things friendly -- give your comments the way you would if a good friend asked you for your opinion.

3. If you don't have anything conformation-related to say, please PM the horse's owner instead of replying in here.
People posting in this area are looking for conformation-related responses. Even if you're not well versed in conformation, please don't be shy about trying to critique the horse or ask questions about his/her conformation. But, since this is the conformation clinic, please make sure your response does pertain to conformation! Comments such as "he sure is pretty!" should be made via PM if you aren't also commenting on the horse's conformation.

4. People WILL say things you disagree with.
Keep your comments focused on your own ideas, and not reactions to other people's posts.
If you think you'll be bothered by seeing comments that you think are "wrong" - then don't visit this forum!!!
It is not your job to convince everyone that your opinion is correct. Say what you believe and let others come to their own conclusions.

If people have trouble following these rules, we will make critiquing by invitation only.

I don't have anything to say conformation wise but...where is her tail? Is it wrapped in that cloth or cut off? I notice she had one in the first pictures, just thought there may be a story there. I would like to say she's pretty and looks nice and willing.

Well legged up, love her shoulder and hip. Nice bone, top line, neck and undergrith. Can't say that she is perfect - there isn't such a thing - but I really like her build and any flaws she may have are too minute to mention.

I LIKE her! She very well could have some appy or POA in her somewhere, although very minimally the pattern she's displaying looks like a snowflake. However I'm not seeing any other characteristics, so they could just be birdcatcher spots.

I really like the way she's put together. She has a nice shoulder, trim throatlatch, elegant thin neck, beautiful hip, plenty of bone, and large hooves. She does look a bit long in the back and sickle-hocked. She has a cute head, while it's not overly feminine or typey, she still has a petite muzzle and a nice-sized jowl. Her expression is the same as my mare's; sweet and kind, but also an alpha that is very intelligent and is also very independent. I LOVE horses like that, I find that they are hard workers that enjoy having a job and being trained.

I'd say she's a heckuva nice mare, grade or no . I'm sure you'll enjoy her!

Ohh I LOVE her. She's got that conformation that would make her look super cute english and western. (I like big butts english :-P) She's got nice withers that don't look too high or too flat backed. She also has nice straight legs...I also love her freckles!

she's a cutie. Do you have any pictures of her undersaddle and/or moving?

for a cross breed grade she's got fairly nice conformation....only thing that really stands out to me is her neck doesn't tie in very nicely and in the second picture at the top she looks like she has post legs but guessing that was just the picture as they don't look so straight in the other photos

David, her tail is in the bag - it's one of those 3-piece tail bags that you braid.

Crooked, I don't have any yet of her undersaddle, I'm hoping to bring the camcorder out with me sometime in the next week and I will hopefully get a video together of what she looks like right now.

She's a lot of fun to work with and has come a long ways in the three weeks or so that I've had her, but she definitely is one where you give an inch she'll try to take a mile!

The only bad things I can point out are that she has a "hatchet neck" (the dip right before the withers- it looks like someone took a hatchet to her), and she is long in the back. Ideally, I would like for her croup to slope less, but that is JMO. She has nice bone and a nicely sloped shoulder, and she is adorable!

I would love to see a bit more bone and foot for the weight she is carrying up top but she is very attractive otherwise!

A very nice looking mare. I like the flow of her neck, she has a very nice angle to her shoulder with good withers. Good haunches. Her back is a tad longer than I like, but yet well within normal. My only concern is her pasterns seem to upright, but other than that her legs look good.

Well, her build definitely screams quarter horse. She has a good built chest and nice hindquarters. Her head and neck tie in well with the rest of her body. All in all she is a great looking quarter horse mare.
