Dymond Maker Queen, 11 year old AQHA mare

Before you respond with a critique, please make sure you thoroughly understand the guidelines. If you haven't already done so, please read them here:

http://forum.horsetopia.com/viewtopic.php?t=5936

Registered Name
: Dymond Maker Queen
Barn name: Dymond (babydoll, lil'stinker, girlie, miss picky)
Breed: AQHA
Age: 11
Gender: Mare
Height: 15.2 h
Pedigree: http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/dymond+maker+queen

Horse's current job and future intended uses:
Dymond was broke to ride (green broke) as a 2 year old and then spent the next 6 years as a broodmare. After that she continued to be a broodmare, but was ridden occasionally. Some western, some english. Currently she is a riding horse only, some western, some english and some trail.

For the Future:
Despite being asked about breeding her quite often, I think her broodmare days are over. We enjoy her as a riding horse and companion. We continue to train her and would like to start some low level dressage. Mainly we want a nice all around horse.

Additional Information:
Sorry that the pictures aren't the best "conformation" shots. The sideway pictures make her look butthigh, but she is standing on higher ground with her hindend. She is actually very balanced in that regard...she's also not completely shed out yet !

Thank you

1. Be honest but friendly.
All horses have flaws -- you can certainly point them out. BUT, do not say things in a way that could be construed as rude or overly negative.
Keep all comments focused on the horse. Do not say anything critical about the owner.

2. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Just like how all horses have flaws, they all have good points. If you have something negative to say, be sure to also include a positive comment.
Keep things friendly -- give your comments the way you would if a good friend asked you for your opinion.

3. If you don't have anything conformation-related to say, please PM the horse's owner instead of replying in here.
People posting in this area are looking for conformation-related responses. Even if you're not well versed in conformation, please don't be shy about trying to critique the horse or ask questions about his/her conformation. But, since this is the conformation clinic, please make sure your response does pertain to conformation! Comments such as "he sure is pretty!" should be made via PM if you aren't also commenting on the horse's conformation.

4. People WILL say things you disagree with.
Keep your comments focused on your own ideas, and not reactions to other people's posts.
If you think you'll be bothered by seeing comments that you think are "wrong" - then don't visit this forum!!!
It is not your job to convince everyone that your opinion is correct. Say what you believe and let others come to their own conclusions.

Starting from the face back...

Her head appears slightly plain, Id like it to be a little more feminine but its certainly not terrible. Her jowl area could stand to be cleaned up a little but the length of her neck is very nice. Ties in slightly low on her shoulder but she should carry herself just fine with a good natural head set. Her chest/shoulders look great and her legs appear well boned. Im not sure if it is just the photos but she looks like she may toe out a little up front and in the back. She's got a nice short back with a slightly longer underline.. very good. I would like to see more hip on her with conditioning she should have a pretty nice round hip. She's a little straight thru her stifle up until her hocks but its not bad.

All in all she appears pretty well put together. She has a beautiful soft eye and looks intelligent. Im no dressage expert so I have no idea how well she'd do in that area. But I could see her in my barn!

Thank you

I'm sorry I have such bad pics for conformation. She actually toes in very slightly, but the farrier that used to trim her has a reputation to trim in a fashion that ends up with horses toeing in...

It has been corrected with the new farrier, but very very slowly, of course.

I agree about her head. She does not have that babydoll feminine head, but I still think its cute Its not roman nosed (which I don't like) or to big, just very straight...so I agree, not feminine.

We are working on muscling her up and she is coming along well. When I got her the biggest thing about her, was the foal belly..hehe. Now the muscles are developing and I think they will get even more defined, as I'm conditioning her slowly, no heavy work load...

About the dressage. I'm only interested in the low level . And I only like the classical riding, not the modern dressage. Basically the concept of "gymnastisizing" ( i probably spelled that wrong) the horse, so it stayes suble and strong through old age.

She doesn't have the super slowness of the western pleasure horse. What I loved about her from the get go are the big sweeping beautiful gaits. Lots of "drive".

How do I clean up a jowl area? Is that the "sweating" thing? I'm not going to show, so I'm not to worried about it, but definitely curious

We originally wanted just a very plain, safe and dependable horse, no papers needed. Then we got our Dymond. I didn't even know much about the bloodlines and whatnot, and it has been great fun researching (she has Man of War and the Godolphin arabian in her line) and learning.

What is the best about her is her personality. What a kind and sweet mare. You would never guess behavoir wise, when she is in season, it doesn't change her at all. Plus she can make "faces". When she begs, she looks at you sooooooooo imploringly, putting her head sideways and her eyes are like the cats in "Shrek"...LOL

She's something else.

I can't wait to see how she continues to develope with some more work.

She reminds me a lot of her sire IronMaker, conformation wise and her head ...

Here is a picture of him.

The other funny thing...

Dymond has this thing, when she is relaxed her lower lip hangs a bit loose/lower, very funny and endearing to me.

I recently found a picture of her grandfather (dams dad) Tiger Leo, and he has the same exact expression on his face as Dymond and the lower lip, too...cracks me up

Here is a picture of him

http://www.steyskal.com/photos/tiger_leo.jpg

Thank you for the critique

Ha! The lower lip droop. My app filly, Dezirae does it sometimes too. But the worst Ive ever seen is on a friend of mine's App mare. She has the laziest lips Ive ever seen. They just hang. But she is so sweet. Nothing fazes her. She's always just been the type of horse with that "chill" attitude.

Her sire is very pretty, she definitely takes after him! It was hard to really tell if she was actually toeing in/out with those photos. You know how horses can just stand funny. My QH gelding toes in a lot up front. Dont dare think about going over 6 weeks without a trim... he'll start tripping and knocking himself like mad. But regular trims and you'd barely notice he toes in like that.

To clean up the jowl area you just sweat it whenever you are exercising her or leave it on while she is stalled (if you stall your horses that is).

Really there isnt too much wrong with your mare. I say with good conditioning she will tone up nicely and look awesome!

once again, thank you

She is out 24/7, only inside for feeding or bad weather.

Hm, need to look into a "neck sweater thingie" for while we exercise. Are there particular ones you can recommend or ones to stay away from? Gosh, don't know anything about them..hehe

Will go "google" now, though

She's gorgeous, but does look alittle long in the back. It might just be the angle of the photo though, I don't see it in the others. She has a plain head, not babydollish, but I've seen WAY worse. Nice all around horse you have there, she sure looks like a sweet heart! Oh and the nice lower lip is fine too, infact a very wise trusted horse person I once knew told me take a fat lip means a sweet, calm horse!

Personally I prefer the neoprene sweats myself. There are other types but thats what I use, neoprene. You can get them from most any tack shop or even order online. The only thing to watch for.. make sure your horse isnt the playful type. One time I left a full neck sweat laying in front of my stallion when he was younger and he ripped it to shreds playing with it. Took two seconds of me not paying him any attention.
