Smokin Gold Blaze. 5 yr old AQHA.

Before you respond with a critique, please make sure you thoroughly understand the guidelines. If you haven't already done so, please read them here:

http://forum.horsetopia.com/viewtopic.php?t=5936

Breed: AQHA
Age: 5
Gender: Gelding
Height: 15.3-16.0
Horse's current job and future intended uses: Barrel prospect-Barrel Horse. Was started slow, bred for the track, and turned into a barrel horse. Has never competed, but been hauled, team penned on, cowboy mounted shooting, trail ridden, and knows the barrel pattern, just adding speed and improving. Currently suffering from a pulled stifle, so competition is a little ways off.
Additional Information: Full brother, as a four year old, just sold for $10,000. Quiet, in your pocket pony.

In my opinion, I would like to see him a little wider...and his withers not so high.

Here are the rules about how to critique horses in the conformation clinic. Please check back here as this forum progresses since we will be making updates as we go along.

1. Be honest but friendly.
All horses have flaws -- you can certainly point them out. BUT, do not say things in a way that could be construed as rude or overly negative.
Keep all comments focused on the horse. Do not say anything critical about the owner.

2. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Just like how all horses have flaws, they all have good points. If you have something negative to say, be sure to also include a positive comment.
Keep things friendly -- give your comments the way you would if a good friend asked you for your opinion.

3. If you don't have anything conformation-related to say, please PM the horse's owner instead of replying in here.
People posting in this area are looking for conformation-related responses. Even if you're not well versed in conformation, please don't be shy about trying to critique the horse or ask questions about his/her conformation. But, since this is the conformation clinic, please make sure your response does pertain to conformation! Comments such as "he sure is pretty!" should be made via PM if you aren't also commenting on the horse's conformation.

4. People WILL say things you disagree with.
Keep your comments focused on your own ideas, and not reactions to other people's posts.
If you think you'll be bothered by seeing comments that you think are "wrong" - then don't visit this forum!!!
It is not your job to convince everyone that your opinion is correct. Say what you believe and let others come to their own conclusions.

I do apologize for the pictures, I can't upload very well. Not to mention, I'm the only one in that barn, currently, thus, taking conformation pictures with big puppy dog there... difficult.

His pedigree...

This horse has a nice muscular rear end, but from the front he looks weak, his neck is long and skinny. He is pretty though I like the deep chestnut color.

He's a very nice boy.

Like ilovepaints said, his front end is a little weak compared to the back end. However with work that's correctable.

My main concern is how downhill he looks in these pictures. I always look for my barrel horses to be flat or a little uphill, as they dig in better when turning, and naturally carry their weight more on their backend.

I agree. He does look weak in the front. Honestly, he looks more like a TB than a QH, the way he's built. I think if you build up his muscle tone a bit, he'd look better. Not saying he doesn't look very nice now just saying he needs a bit more muscle tone.

Any suggestions on how to do this?

Currently, I'm working him alot with collection, tieing around, etc. Things to build up the bending and flexing of his neck. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as I definately agree to what you're all saying.

His breeding is speed, speed speed. The racing QHs do tend to look thourobredy(sp). As for building up his front end, wet saddle blankets, lots of slow easy work. It will get there.
