Dragonfly- 8 yo Thoroughbred mare

Before you respond with a critique, please make sure you thoroughly understand the guidelines. If you haven't already done so, please read them here:

http://forum.horsetopia.com/viewtopic.php?t=5936

Breed: Thoroughbred
Age: 8
Gender: mare
Height: 16.3
Horse's current job and future intended uses: Dragon is my all around riding horse. I ride her english and western. have done a little jumping on her (18 in./green jumper class at a few fun shows) would like to get her jumping more. I do a few fun shows on her in the summer.
Additional Information: This was my first horse. I got her as a coming 3 yo that had been off the track for about a month. I was green and she was green, but we've been getting along pretty well. I've even given a few lessons on her. Most of the time she's laid back but she can be a big goofball too.

1. Be honest but friendly.
All horses have flaws -- you can certainly point them out. BUT, do not say things in a way that could be construed as rude or overly negative.
Keep all comments focused on the horse. Do not say anything critical about the owner.

2. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Just like how all horses have flaws, they all have good points. If you have something negative to say, be sure to also include a positive comment.
Keep things friendly -- give your comments the way you would if a good friend asked you for your opinion.

3. If you don't have anything conformation-related to say, please PM the horse's owner instead of replying in here.
People posting in this area are looking for conformation-related responses. Even if you're not well versed in conformation, please don't be shy about trying to critique the horse or ask questions about his/her conformation. But, since this is the conformation clinic, please make sure your response does pertain to conformation! Comments such as "he sure is pretty!" should be made via PM if you aren't also commenting on the horse's conformation.

4. People WILL say things you disagree with.
Keep your comments focused on your own ideas, and not reactions to other people's posts.
If you think you'll be bothered by seeing comments that you think are "wrong" - then don't visit this forum!!!
It is not your job to convince everyone that your opinion is correct. Say what you believe and let others come to their own conclusions.

Im no conformation expert, but here goes. She seem's to be camped out/under, whatever you call it. Needs a little more muscle and weight on her rear end. A little high withered, but a very cute face. Front legs look to be nice and clean

What I noticed is that she seems to have a very thin neck for the size of her head. She is also completely lacking muscle all over, especially in the rear end. On the plus side, she seems very level from front to back, and her legs look pretty straight and clean to me.

lovely horse! nice feet and legs good bone and proportion. only comment is neck is a bit thin and she lacks muscle tone...perhaps in addition to riding, you could lunge her sometimes with side reins or other ground work or ridden work to build her up, but that is a personal choice, her basic conformation is good and lovely sweet expression!

Pasolover, I am so sorry about your girl. If your ever in Virginia you can come visit her.
As for the muscle, I guess that's what happens when you give a horse 2 years off. I didn't really realize how little muscle she had until I put her pictures up. then I started noticing all kinds of things. I'm still kinda new to judgung conformation, but does anyone else think her hip looks a little short/steep or is it just because she's lacking muscle?

Yes, she is a bit goose-rumped. Her neck looks long/ewe but I think that would diminish with muscling. She has a straightish shoulder and is a bit long in the back. On the good side- she has nice clean legs and feet and a pretty face!

she looks like she has decent bone and feet for her build. Her muscling in her neck looks a little backward. She's a little built underneath and is lacking a solid topline. Some good flatwork could really improve this girl. Her head is a little coarse and non-feminine. I bet she'd look good with a shorter pulled mane too. I bet she moves pretty well as she has a long radius bone.

I agree, needs more muscle tone. But overall, a very pretty horse!

I removed a few pictures from this thread. Please remember to stay on topic of the horse's conformation.

Thanks.
