Toby- 6yo grade palomino pony. updated pics

Breed: Grade (QHish)
Age: 6
Gender: Gelding
Height: 14hands ( I need to measure him to be sure but pretty close)
Horse's current job and future intended uses: Trail, All Around Fun Pony, Barrels, Team Penning, Practice Rope Horse. Resale prospect but he is growing on me!
Additional Information:
Toby is the pony I took on trade for Willy. Very green. Willing. Handy. Moves off leg and rein very well. Trots out nice but will slow to nice jog. Seems to be good leaded but inconsistent with canter , however I only have been riding him about a week and he probably doesnt have more than 30 days of good riding on him overall.
Biggest problem with him so far is the darn hair!!

How to Critique Horses - read this if you want to comment

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are the rules about how to critique horses in the conformation clinic. Please check back here as this forum progresses since we will be making updates as we go along.

1. Be honest but friendly.
All horses have flaws -- you can certainly point them out. BUT, do not say things in a way that could be construed as rude or overly negative.
Keep all comments focused on the horse. Do not say anything critical about the owner.

2. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Just like how all horses have flaws, they all have good points. If you have something negative to say, be sure to also include a positive comment.
Keep things friendly -- give your comments the way you would if a good friend asked you for your opinion.

3. If you don't have anything conformation-related to say, please PM the horse's owner instead of replying in here.
People posting in this area are looking for conformation-related responses. Even if you're not well versed in conformation, please don't be shy about trying to critique the horse or ask questions about his/her conformation. But, since this is the conformation clinic, please make sure your response does pertain to conformation! Comments such as "he sure is pretty!" should be made via PM if you aren't also commenting on the horse's conformation.

4. People WILL say things you disagree with.
Keep your comments focused on your own ideas, and not reactions to other people's posts.
If you think you'll be bothered by seeing comments that you think are "wrong" - then don't visit this forum!!!
It is not your job to convince everyone that your opinion is correct. Say what you believe and let others come to their own conclusions.

If people have trouble following these rules, we will make critiquing by invitation only.

Nice shoulder and a great eye, and he is adorable! He has a short neck and a short croup, and I'm guessing its the angle of the pictures, but his legs look crooked. (I'm almost positive its the pictures though). He's a cutie!

In the one picture his left front leg looks crooked, but I think it is most likely just the movement and shading. He is a little thick where his neck and shoulder meet, but other than that I can't say anything else against him. Overall, I like him. A good broke pony of his size and color will be easy to sell and bring a good price.

Updated pics

Almost 2 months later.. Here is how he has changed.
Riding good. Very quick and handy. Smart and super disposition.
I measured him at exactly 14 hands.

He has a cute lil sliding stop....

and loves to take a bow...

I LOVE this pony. He is adorable. The best thing about him is he always has his ears forward. He has to be very bright! He also has a very kind eye and a cute way of going. Good job!

I really wonder if he isn't a little quarter horse with some cow horse bloodlines. His looks, build, and the disposition you described sure would fit. We have a few that are only 14 hands (some just barely) and we just got Peanut back - he is 12.3 hands tall and should be fully grown as he is 5 yrs old.

Calico.....Are you gonna keep him? I know you were thinking of finishing him and selling him, but I think he would be worth holding on to until the market is better. He should fetch a nice price later on.

I have originally planned to sell him and make some money.
I took him and $800 for Willy. I think Willy was worth a good bit but considering some of his attitude issues and the market, it was going to be hard to get it. I also have in the back of my mind that where I sold Willy, I can also get him back and since I sold him cheap enough, he wont ask much more if I want him back. The plan was to sell Toby in a couple months when I got him riding and looking better for whatever I could get out of him. When the guy got him, he was an unbroke lil bronc that had very little handling. He paid $200 for him and didnt put much training on him, just basically got him under saddle. He came and looked at him the this week. Was totally amazed!! Not only at how good he looked but how well he rode and everything.
With his size, his color and looks, and disposition.. once I get him alittle more solid... I KNOW people are gonna want him. He is so handy. He is for sure gonna work a cow. I have been roping barrels off him and dragging them. He will be good on trails AND I think he is gonna jump real cute.....SOOOO.. he has lots of options as to what someone could do with him.... therefore at this point he is a keeper (and an easy one!) til the market starts to change...AND I will want him to go to a very good home!!

I don't blame you. He looks very useful. I would surely want to keep him around for a while. Looks like he would be a lot of fun to get to the bottom of, if he even has one! Looks like you made a good deal for Willy. Always good to be on the up side of a deal. He is great, and I am partial to Palomino's. I have a APHA Palomino with foundation bloodlines and he reminds me of her.

A local dealer guy is as far as I know back about him (I hope to talk to him at a sale in a few weeks). He brought him to a sale the end of last year. I guess he ran thru. The sales office showed that he sold for $500 to a woman who said she didnt want THAT horse and she didnt bid on THAT horse. So nobody claimed him. That dealer got paid the $500 and the Sale got stuck with the horse, so he went to their regular sale barn and Dan saw him and offered him $200. He was wooly and wild and he liked it that he looked like a little mustang. Once he got some of the bronco out of him, he kinda liked him but ran out of time to mess with him. He had offered to trade his White Pony (which I hadnt even seen at the time) for Willy and I said I dont want THAT pony.. ... but when I was out there I said "hmmmm .., let me ride THAT pony!" and I really liked him.... so that's how Me, a dedicated reg AQHA owner of preferrably bays got THAT pony...
