TWH!! Brody!

Breed: Tennessee Walking Horse
Age: 5-6 months
Gender: Colt
Height: 12hh
Horse's current job and future intended uses: Growing!!

Additional Information:I think Brody's legs are looking a lot straighter,it dosen't look to me like his knee turns out in the front anymore. He has another farrier appt tomorrow.
He coliced last Friday 5-16-08 , the vet came out and pumped his stomach with 1/2 gal water & 1/2 gal mineral oil.And two Banamine injections .One in the jugular and one in his neck triangle 6 hrs later. He is doing fine now. I think eat ate too much grain at once, now I am weighing it out and giving it 3 times a day.He has 3 days of antibiotics left . Hopefully he will be pneumonia free.Poor guy!!!

Brody got his hooves trimmed 5/5/08.And the farrier is working on getting his hooves back to normal. They were way out of whack. Appt in two weeks for more shaping. The angles look much better to me and he seems a lot more comfortable .
The vet also came out Brody ,was sick when I bought him ( I always do the pity buys) and has pneumonia + bronchitis .So he is on 20 day antibiotics, feed through. It is not serious enough for injectable antibiotics. I posted more pics and info below!! Thanks.

Before Trim

AFTER

His legs seem stronger and better everyday. He is not coughing hardly at all anymore , only 3 days so far on the antibiotic !! Seems to be working!!!

Here are the rules about how to critique horses in the conformation clinic. Please check back here as this forum progresses since we will be making updates as we go along.

1. Be honest but friendly.
All horses have flaws -- you can certainly point them out. BUT, do not say things in a way that could be construed as rude or overly negative.
Keep all comments focused on the horse. Do not say anything critical about the owner.

2. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
Just like how all horses have flaws, they all have good points. If you have something negative to say, be sure to also include a positive comment.
Keep things friendly -- give your comments the way you would if a good friend asked you for your opinion.

3. If you don't have anything conformation-related to say, please PM the horse's owner instead of replying in here.
People posting in this area are looking for conformation-related responses. Even if you're not well versed in conformation, please don't be shy about trying to critique the horse or ask questions about his/her conformation. But, since this is the conformation clinic, please make sure your response does pertain to conformation! Comments such as "he sure is pretty!" should be made via PM if you aren't also commenting on the horse's conformation.

4. People WILL say things you disagree with.
Keep your comments focused on your own ideas, and not reactions to other people's posts.
If you think you'll be bothered by seeing comments that you think are "wrong" - then don't visit this forum!!!
It is not your job to convince everyone that your opinion is correct. Say what you believe and let others come to their own conclusions.

If people have trouble following these rules, we will make critiquing by invitation only

Being so young, its really almost too hard to judge the foal fairly.

Looks like a real sweet little guy but it is kinda hard to judge when he's so hairy and not squared up.

He sure is a handsome boy ! Nice balance to his 'baby" withers and his rear, nice medium short back (which is desirable).

With a horse that young it is hard to tell what he will evolve into. Then again under all that fur its hard to even know what you've got.

I just clipped my filly TWH who was born in October with a llama coat on and she looks way more grown up now.

What are your plans for this handsome colt? Best of Luck with your fine lad.....

Cute little guy. But at his age, and with all his winter fuzzies it is really hard to accurately critique his confirmation. They can change almost daily for the first 6-9 months.

One thing I did notice however, is his front left leg. This would be something I would have the vet check, if correction is needed, now is the time to do it while he is young and correction can be made.

If you look at the photo of him front on, you can notice that his left leg rotates out beginning from below his knee all the way through his cannon, pastern and his hoof.

Hopefully it is something that with time can correct itself or be corrected with vet and farrier care.

New Pics !!!
Do you think his front feet are angled wrong? Someone told me he was "duck hooved" . Can the farrier help fix that as he grows?? Oh and do I need to wait until he turns one to trim his feet???? Thanks

No, please don't wait till this colt is 1 yr. old to have feet work done. The sooner the better, as a good farrier can help to correct many issue's.

Proper angles and trimming of his feet are vital to his over all health, movement and at his young age confirmation.

Getting a good farrier involved now, may help to improve all of the above.

It is really hard to judge from the pics, but something about his right front strikes me as him having weak pasterns. His feet do have an flatness to them, but it is hard to see in the photos. Have you had a vet look him over? If it were me, I would have a vet and farrier take a look at him. As someone else suggested earlier, it looked rotated at the knee on one front leg, then in another view he looked low on his pastern. Not sure if this is a baby growing issue, or a problem that needs some work to get things worked out. Rather than wait though, I would have an evaluation NOW and catch any issues that might be fixable.

Good luck with the sweet boy =)

I have made an appt. with the farrier to come out . I don't know if he will stand for the farrier .When I pick up his feet he wants to fall over. I guess he just needs to learn .If he can at least get his front hooves done , I think it will help a lot. He seems clumsy and uncomfortable. The man I bought him from was supposed to come out and do them , BUT, never did I. I have to call the vet out anyway ,so I will see what they say!!!!

What a cute baby! I agree, trimming would help a lot. As far as wanting to fall over when you pick up his feet, my little guy did the same thing. Obviously they are very gangly and down-right uncoordinated at this age. He just needs to build up confidence as well as balance. That will come with time. I would recommend working on picking up his feet everyday. Just a few inches at first. Let him know that it's not a big deal. Gradually increase how much you lift the foot. And make sure to let the foot go and praise him like CRAZY when he odes a good job!! Good Luck!! He is a cutie!

Before

After

Well I had the vet and the farrier out Monday . Brody has been sick since I got him and wasn't getting better . So he has pneumonia + bronchitis .Poor guy !!!!!!!!!!! He is on a 20 day antibiotic powder . His white blood cell count value was 16,400 ,and it shouldn't go above 12,500 . Red blood cell count is usually 32-50 Brody's is 21 so he is anemic .... But the vet said he should get better with the meds and he is going to be rechecked in 20 days! Poor thing.. When I got him he was in rough shape he is coming through though!!!!!!!! Also the farrier trimmed his hooves , he said they were deforming from being too long! He has to come back in two weeks to do some more work. !he said he was walking on the totally wrong part of his foot. But he seems like a great farrier. Referred by the vet! And Brody did really good for him , probably to sick to fight!!! I hope he gets better soon, I have never seen him healthy! Well here are some more pics I'll get some more soon. Thanks everyone for all your help and comments!!!!!

Oh that poor baby - glad you got the vet out and the farrier. You should see a big improvement in him now!!!! Can't believe he's been sick this whole time - you'll probably see a whole different horse from here on out. Good luck and keep us updated.

Give him some time to get healthy, and his new foot to grow out - and you are going to see a wonderful boy there..

Good luck, prayers and hugs, and do keep us posted.. He is so sweet looking..
