Conformation Clinic #45- TB Filly

Before you respond with a critique, please make sure you thoroughly understand the guidelines. If you haven't already done so, please read them here:
http://forum.horsetopia.com/viewtopic.php?t=5936

Breed: Thoroughbred
Age: 3 years old
Gender: 16 hhs
Height: Filly
Additional Info: Her top line shows best on the picture of her standing on concrete, the one of her standing on the dirt is more square but uneven ground, so she looks downhill in that one. It is difficult to get her square as she doesn't want to stand, being a horse fresh from the track.

Definitly looks like she's right off the track and still coming down. It would be interesting to see how she matures and fills out. She's quite narrow all the way around right now.

Not a very feminine head, kind of coarse but okay, nothing ugly just not very feminine. Nice tight throatlatch.
Don't really like her neck though. Kind of short and ewe'y. Shoulder is kind of straight and short but it matches her front pastern angles. Very high withers may make saddle fitting difficult! But you sure won't have to worry about the saddle slipping.
Fairly long back but she's a race TB so normal, not excessively long. Neither photo really lets one see her hip but it looks well muscled for the condition she's in and looks to be well shaped and powerful.
Legs look good and straight all around, maybe a touch toe'd out in the front but could just be how she's standing. May be a bit sickle hocked but for me that's not a big issue as long as it's not too bad.

Not sure what her intended occupation is but nothing stands out that would hinder her ability IMO though she may not make a top level dressage horse with the straight shoulder.

I don't know how to judge a race TB so I will do it based on my learning of the stock horse type.

I think her back looks long and kinds swayed.
She looks a little toed out and pretty narrow for her age.
I agree her head is not very femanine, but not bad either.

I can't tell from the pictures but one she looks like she goes down hill and the other looks like she runs up hill so I don't know about that.

I have a question about looking at a horses shounlder. Can you take the picture and draw a line on the shounder to illistrate how you determine legnth and slope. And maybe put a line on the pasterns to show hoe they match?

I can definitely tell she's right off the track. Still slender and narrow. I love her muscle tone and from what I can see she has a nicely rounded hip, that should fill out niclely. It does look like she toes out a bit in the front and maybe a tad in the back. Her withers are high, but that's typical for a TB. She's a very beautiful filly!

I thought she was really narrow in the front end,I have seen 3 year old TBs on the track and some are bigger in chest. Once she fills out she will look better both front and back ends. She has high withers, nothing uncommon with TBs(my 12 year old TB gelding does too). I believe once she comes down from life on the track and fills out in certain areas, she would be prospect for dressge and or jumper.

The only negative that satnds out is her pasterns. They are straight & narrow. Her feet look small, but that's fixable- typical race shod. Her rump will muscle well with proper conditioning, as will her gaskins (they look poor now). I don't think her shoulder is too straight to hinder performance. Her wither isn't so high as her neck is set low. You're going to have to focus on her hind end in order to get her to be lighter on the forehand, but she should be able to carry herself well enough. She has a nice deep girth to make up for the narrowness of her chest. A little toed out up front- some of which will fix itself in about 6 months with better farrier work. Her hind legs seem perfectly normal for what she is, not too sickled at all and I really like how well underneath herself she is with her lower leg behind (more pushing power over fences). Overall, she's nice enough and in a year from now will look like a completely different animal. Only thing I'd keep an eye on is her pasterns, and subsequently her fetlocks, especially up front if you're going to jump her eventually. Have her pedigree? I'm just curious...

ETA: There have been comments about her neck, and yes, there are some issues w/it. I wanted to add that I have seen horses off the track w/much worse necks than this mare that over time have developed well. With proper work, stretching/deep work, she will build up the topline of her neck just fine.Look at this horse's neck, he's 4 weeks off his last race here (and had just had a bath), then look at his neck in my avatar for comparison.

Her neck is deffinintely ewe'd and her shoulder is straight, so her stride will be on the choppy side.

I do not think that her back is too long, especially for a mare. She does seem to be a bit narrow, but that isn't uncommon in TBs. IMO, I think that her head is nice!

I would need to know what you are planning to do with her to properly evaluate her.

Also, this may sound harsh, but if you were planning on breeding her, I would think against it.

Not sure if Im allowed to do this, but to answer some questions that were asked about her, shes put on a little weight, not much in the past two months, and as for a career, thats really up to her. She the most curious thing you ever saw, even tried to climb into a forklift while the engine was on.... *headshake* Shes grown...almost 17hh now, and her feet look AWESOME now, shes barefoot all around, and completely sound to boot. IMO shes what a racehorse should look like, a filly anyway. She is narrow built but her withers arent as bad as they seem, if my bf can ride her bareback and not complain then we have no wither issues When she trots she really trots, big long strides. Her registered name is Media Luna, by Dominated Debut, and out of Erinova, by Erins Isle. She performed well on the track in my opinion, it was her trainer that hindered her success, running her in sprints when her pedigree clearly says distance. I watched ALL her races as I was interested in her for a good long time. In one race she was first out the gate (usually is) but held her ground, and took the lead. I had tears in my eyes, but she ran out of gas and sank back. I trust this filly enough to put my BF's 8 year old sis on. Ok I totally digressed. I am considering breeding her, not any time soon, I want to see what she turns out like. Barn owner says she wont fill out a whole lot, says shes the daintiest filly shes ever seen, very lady like she says. I really trust her opinion because they originally raced and trained tbs for the track before they boarded. If the present is any sign of the future, then Im darned lucky to know this filly. Ill repost some pics of her soon, in fact ill include a vid of her goofing off in the roundpen for you guys, so you can keep up with how she progresses. I love reading all the constructive criticism from you guys, of course she has her flaws, but Ive never been blessed with such a horse as her. Also so much praise as well, Thanks you guys! BTW its not a huge roundpen so her movement is pretty constricted...but its really just her goofing off and "trying" to buck

Edited to add: her head is NEVER that high being ridden or elsewhere, she keeps it high in the roundpen attempting to see over the top.

Her trot reminded me of my TB's,and no matter the different farriers we ahve had they have always complimented his feet. My 10 year old granddaughter has ridden Dancer and has had no problems with him-I am always in area with her-and she rides English. She loves to canter him,and he ahs never broke into gallop with her or me. You can see the potential in her as she continues to mature.
