Conformation Clinic # 13 ~ Half-Arabian Mare!

Before you respond with a critique, please make sure you thoroughly understand the guidelines. If you haven't already done so, please read them here:

http://forum.horsetopia.com/viewtopic.php?t=5936

Also, please forego comments such as "He sure is pretty." Or "I like him a lot". The participants here are looking for technical critiques.

Time for our next Conformation Clinic candidate!

Breed: Registered Half-Arab (Arabian X Commercial)

Age: 4 years old

Hight: 15.3HH

Sex: Mare

Current Job: Halter, Driving and Saddleseat horse in the Arabian Circuit

Future Intended Uses: Dressage, Jumping on the open circuit

Other Info: Chick Pea was bought as a weanling to become a high quality saddleseat horse. As she grew up, she lost much of her Arabian refinement and is now considered a Sport Horse. Before I was going to change her discipline, I was wondering if her conformation will permit her to compete in Sport Horse In Hand, Dressage and perhaps Jumping classes.

Have fun, and critique away!

Grr.. the only thing harder to see and judge than a black horse .. is a black horse with no good side shots. Cant see the neck, the shoulders, the back.. the underline.. the topline.. the hip.. sigh.. you get the idea. From the angles we can see..

Nice straight legs, hooves are longer than I would keep them, but normal for what I see in saddleseat usually. For sporthorse or jumping, they may be evaluated by a farrier. Her neck is pretty muscled, but seems a little short. It could be just the frame she is in though. Has more slope in her croup than I would expect to see out of an arab but should suit her fine in jumping. Hip seems nice and stong.

She has a pretty face, but I can see where they say that she lost the refinement. Her ears are pretty long.. but nicely shaped and cute tips on them. She definately has that more compact, upright look and stance of the NSH, rather than an arab. Her rear pasterns look like they might be a little short and upright, but not bad.

Ok.. that is all I can come up with.. she really is quite pretty.. very flashy. Not a horse that I would kick off my property that is for sure

So this is a half arab and half commercial, which is.......
"The Commercial horse, or canadian crossbred, as it is also known, is a crossbred of a light horse, usually a hackney and a draft horse, usually a clydesdale. "
Thank you very much. I probably have no business posting in the conformation area but I always like to monitor and learn some things.
In spite of the rules, I love this horse...it's beautiful!

Nice color choice. I love the blacks.
She has gorgeous expression, but her ears are a little big. Not that will hurt her performing. I can't see very many angles here in these pictures. Black horses are very difficult to tell.
In the second picture her headset looks just a little low to me for saddleseat. I would have expected it a little more elevated. If she is a saddleseat horse and built like one too you might have some problems convincing her to extend her gaits instead of lift. Most of them would prefer to lift all day long.
She is a little extra sloped in the croup for an Arab cross but that is workable. Her legs from what we can see are nice and straight. She has enough chrome to be flashy though.
Good luck and keep us posted on her.

I agree with Mellowdane, on everything. However, I would have liked better picture angles to make better judgements. Definitely have to get her to transfer her weight to the back end, which they really haven't done. She is pretty heavy on the fore by the looks of the 2nd shot. Once you trim her down, change her shoes, and transfer her weight, she should give you more reach. I don't see her as being overly upright for what you want to do.
