Conformation Clinic # 12 ~ Appaloosa Mare!

Before you respond with a critique, please make sure you thoroughly understand the guidelines. If you haven't already done so, please read them here:

http://forum.horsetopia.com/viewtopic.php?t=5936

Also, please forego comments such as "He sure is pretty." Or "I like him a lot". The participants here are looking for technical critiques.

Time for our next Conformation Clinic candidate!

Breed: Appaloosa (CPO'd)

Sex: Mare

Age: 3 years old

Hight: 15.2hh

Other Information: She is a very smart, sweet mare and has been trained to be a "kid horse" for showing in 4-H or Youth Breed Classes. She loves to have a job and excels in competitive Trail Classes.
I bought this mare as a 2 yr. old and fell in love with her after 5 minutes.

Have fun, and critique away!

The body shot doesn't really allow us to see her legs in any detail, so a better shot with less shadows and a square stance would assist in a better critique.

From what I can see, she looks to have a very nice head with a lovely expression and eager yet kind eyes. I really like the refinement in her throatlatch, and how her neck connects low on her chest as I think this will give her a natural low head carriage good for western of hunter pleasure type classes.

I like withers on a horse, as this mare has, but I think her owner will have to be very careful will the fit of a western saddle as her withers and upper shoulder look like they may be narrow and allow the saddle to sit too low.

Her chest looks deep, her lungs look rounded, and she is well balanced front and back; both her shoulders and her hindquarters look well porportionned and strong.

The angles of her hocks make me think she should have some power behind and should make a nice performance mount.

Overall I would say she is a very nice mare.

Now based on registration I am assuming that she would be classed as a non-characteristic of the breed, but would still be registered. Please correct me if IM wrong. Anyway...She has a very beautiful and friendly look to her head. Her neck flows nicely into her shoulders...and from what I can see her legs look great. Maybe I would just like to see a little more muscle tone to this mare, but she looks to be a great little halter mare.

Woo.. took me forever to get time to post on here.. Personally I love this mares head! Great expression, soft eye, wide flat forehead. Nice throat. Very mareish. As for the rest of her, she is well put together from what I can see. Black is such a hard color to get definition on anyway, and that angle is rough. Her back does seem a bit long. And she has thinner high withers.. I really cant see anything wrong with her legs or anything, but again, it is so dark and with the angle I can't say one way or another. Also cant see the feet or pasterns, but she looks comfortable and balanced. Nice mare though.. she probably looks great in the ring!

I think she is lovely, and will have a long and happy career.

She looks just like a solid Appy I own. My mare has been very versatile and athletic (she's 19 now), I've foxhunted her, she's been a great jumper, worked cattle, and trail ridden her many miles.

Very nice looking mare and certainly worth getting CPO'd for ApHC competitions.

Good size and conformation, hinting at a strong QH influence. Could use a little more definition, but that could be the shadowed picture. Very nice head, alert, refined, and intelligent.

She would likely have potential in local and statewide ApHC halter if you went that route, but with her size, appearance, and conformation, she should have potential in several disciplines.

Very nice looking build on this mare, she has a beautiful face she looks very smart. She has a very good looking legs good and muscular. I can hardly tell by the picture but it looks like she has a nice level topline which is good.
