I don't have any comments on his conformation. It's a bit hard to comment on a 30 yr old. But he looked fantastic! He was obviously well loved and cared for.

what a beautiful horse he was!

I think the reason he remained so sound is he was so balanced. what I mean is his shoulder layback is exactly the same as his rear angles (or as much as can be seen from pictures.) plus his legs look well straight underhim(not to much bend of pasterns, thats where a lot of qh break-down first) with enough body length so he didn't have to adjust his movement to not hurt/hit himself.

On top of his very nice appearance and long healthy usability, you must have taken very good care of him to be riding him at his age!

edited to place in aswell, he has/had nice decent sized feet and bone. Larger feet spreads out the pounding on a bigger base.

so many qh these days have those thin small bones and tiny feet, its no wonder they break down fast.

I lost a good horse 2 years ago. She was a retired racing standardbred. We had her only 2 years but rode her consistantly. She was never lame nor had any soundness problems. When she passed away, the vet estimated her age to be between 33-34! She had lived with a neglectful owner before me, so sometimes it may be just the horse's good luck that it lives a long life. I am sorry for your loss.

Sorry to hear that this happened. But he lived a very good life it seems. With the right care any horse can look this good in their 30's.

My near 30 year old gelding

I wish my old boy looked at good. He's never been a good eater so as he's aged he's gotten skinny, even though he is doing very well and eats all that I give him, including supplements. I'd still be riding him if he wasn't lame. But I love him for all he has given me in nearly 19 years so he'll stay a pasture ornament and companion to my other horse. He has a home here for life!

He had lovely sound, correct QH conformation.
A real old time "using" horse.
And you loved him well.
Kudos.

He looks great! I will say though, age doesn't mean that a horse is destined to go lame. The two horses that I have owned who have gone lame were 5 years old and 11 years old! We lost 3 horses last year (after the dry summer of '07), but they were age 25, 30, and 34. The 25 year old developed cancer, but the other two were run down due to the lack of grass (according to our vet--she said that the high protein feed along with good quality hay was just not enough for the older horses, that they need grass). Up until the last month or two, they were all in excellent shape and we rode them weekly.
I am sorry for your loss!

Oh, what a beautiful fella he was! And in such fantastic condition too...wow, 30 years old in that photo and doesn't look a day over a nice healthy 12 or so! You took excellent care of your old friend. His good, solid old time QH legs are one of my favorite features on any older QH, Clint included...but gosh, I just love his looks from ear to hoof...gorgeous boy! I'm very sorry for your loss. I love these seniors so much.

Balance

He looks really well balanced. His shoulder and hip length match and his back is slightly shorter. His shoulder angle appears to be at about the fourty - five degree ideal. His hip and shoulder angle match. His leg length from elbow to pastern is equal to the length from his withers to his belly.

His pieces appear to "match". I think that created a body where no part had to carry too much strain. If a spot on the body is weak another has to compensate and often wears out.

Nice thick legs and big feet. short cannons. low hocks. heavy duty.
