Unhappy Had an accident last night, pics added --UPDATE

As hubby and I were about to head out to dinner a thin stray cat darted out on a bridge and ran between the front and rear tires of my car. I locked up my brakes but feared that I didn't manage to miss her.
I did a u-turn to make sure she is at least dead and not suffereing and saw her on the side of the road breathing heavy and in shock. I started shaking and knew it was after hours and no vet in sight. So I called my horse vet. She told me to bring her over to at least put her to sleep if we needed to. The cat was very dazed but didn't seem to have any broken bones. I took her home and she rested and drank.

This morning she ate and came up to me wanting to be held and cuddled. So now We are waiting to see if she can do her "business" and if she is still good I may ask around if someone is missing a cat. In our area most people don't spay and neuter so I'm reluctant to even ask.

Either way, she is doing quite well as of right now. She cleans herself, is hungry and loves people.

Accidents happen, and you did a very responsible and kind thing. It sounds like her story will have a happy end, which is more than many animals who cross the road will have.

Oh, you poor thing. I know how bad you feel, I too hit a cat a couple months back, and he didn't make it...it is so awful to see any animal hurt. It's not your fault though, there was nothing you could do to make that cat stop from running under your car. So, don't feel guilty...and hey at least she is eating and drinking, and acting social! Maybe things will look up for her and she'll make it just fine.

You're so kind as to have stopped and checked on her and taken her to your house.

I ran over a mommy coyote and her baby the other night...I cried for hours. I hate hitting animals, or seeing them in pain.

Thank god that you turned around and took care of her. Sending lots of thoughts and prayers your way for her...she seems like one special kitty.

There was no way you could have missed hitting her, that was not your fault!
From the sound of it, running into you (sorry) may have been the best thing that could have happened to her.
Now we will need pics of your new family member!
See, I have every confidence that she will be fine!! (I'm throwing in a prayer for her, just in case!)

Thanks guys. This little girl seems to be very special and deserves all the prayers she can get. I know it's not my fault but maybe if I would have driven slower etc. ... you know how it is.

She is by no means out of the woods yet. She did manage to steal hubby's heart who had just said the day before that we will not take in any more cats. We had 2 cats for a while and added 3 of Frankie's kittens , which makes it 5 and they are all indoors. Now this but how can you say no? Frankie on the other hand went to get spayed today and will be released back into the barn. Even though she watched me every day taking care of her and the kittens she is feral (all spit and hiss, claws and teeth ). And I don't know if you guys remember Trooper the starving dog. It's a lot of money for shots, spay and neuters, food etc. Not to mention that one of my own dogs had to go to the ER because he suddenly started leaking blood internally (2 years old and was a stray) and $400 later he is fine.

I wish I had more money but don't we all . Maybe we need to change the Rescue name to Horse and all other unwanted animals

I just found a swelling on the inside of her right thigh but it's not the abdomen. She does let me touch it but it doesn't feel good about the size of a golf ball. Then she has that ptch of hair missing on her right side as you can see on the pics. Poor baby.

She also used her cat bed for a pee spot but still slept in it... I guess we are not house broken (I have pine pellets for shavings).

Are you sure the urine didn't leak out while sleeping.Normally kitties won't sleep where they go to the bathroom esp if its wet.It may be from the injury. Don't feel guilty about hitting her, sometimes those things can't be helped.

The saga continues:

I had to leave town on Thursday and didn't like the way the lump looked. Lilly did start using the litter box for pee but hadn't gone poo yet and I got concerned. Hubby took her to the vet while I was gone:

Lilly's lump was a hernia from the accident, all of her gut was in that leg pocket and the only thing keeping it inside the body was the skin. Sooooo ......

We had her vaccinated, the hernia repaired and since that hole in there was so large they were able to spay her through that hole. Come to find out Lilly is about 6 months old. She is negative with all the other disease stuff.

She is recovering fine. My wallet is not. It cost us $400. I know that nobody in this area would be willing to pay me the money back even if they would admit that she is their cat (whoever that would be). Therefore we are keeping Lilly. In 3 months I went from 2 indoor cats to 5.
