Kitty Eyewash?

Tigger was rubbing his face aweful hard today, and when I went to take a look at it, there's a visible piece of fluff floating around on the surface.

Is it safe just to use regular old saline solution to wash it out? I tried surfin' the web, and most things I could find talk about gunky goopy weepy eyes, and he doesn't have any of that, just a foreign object that needs to be flushed out.

I'd really rather not run to the vet for this, but coudl definitely give them a call if you think it's warranted. (Thinking they could give me something to administer myself instead of taking him in.)

That's what I would use. One of my kitties is always bringing home seeds and stuff in his eyes.

Being a contact user I always have saline and eye drops around.

We used saline many times in cats eyes. Another thing we used was dissolved boric acid. It's a powder or crystal and you dissolve it in warm water, then use a cotton ball to wash out their eyes.

I have always used saline with mine. And the regular eye drops from walmart, like artificial tears.

Thanks guys! Bloato-beast is sleeping peacefully now, but it was the second or third time recently I've seen him going at that eye . . . I'll run out and get something now!

(Yes, I wear contacts, but I have disposables, and wouldn't ya know it just a couple weeks ago I ravaged my medicine cabinet tossing stuff that was expired. Don't know how "expired" saline solution can get, but with eyes, I didn't want to take any chances!)

The "expired" stuff is supposed to go in the first aid kit.

If it's unopened it's fine, it's just sterilized salty water anyways.

Even if it's opened it's still good for flushing a wound. Maybe not an eye though.

OK, the funny part is, I actually BOUGHT it for it to go into the first aid kit! Expired in 2006. So I figured even unopened, it was getting pretty long in the tooth, didn't wanna chance it.

Guess I'm lucky that I don't need my first aid kit too often.

My new kittens have eye herpes (yuck, I know ) Anyhoo, the vet recommended (along with recommeding an eye specialist, but that's a whole nother topic) getting an eye wash without preservatives - I am using something called "optic" (I think, I'm not at home) eye wash - its just basically sterilized water and very gentle on kitty eyes... Baush & Lomb has one also, they're in the aisle with all of the contact lens cleaner stuff

Feline occular herpes is actually very common and not like people STD herpes. If you have a cat with FOH ad lysine to their diet, it helps a lot.
