Help (kitten)

So we have this little kitten, the mother cat had I think about 4-5 little ones, one of which lived, the rest .. well didn't make it. So maybe something was wrong with all of them to start out with, this one just made it a little long?

But anyways this one little kitten seems sick sometimes, and sometimes not. At first I thought it was because it wasn't getting enough water, since momma cat stopped nursing. It would eat, and I would bring it water, and it would slowly drink, or just drop its head in the water. Well the whole time this little guy/girl's eyes are matted shut, basically just a yucky mess, I get warm water and clean twice daily, sometimes more. The mom cats still take's interest in the little thing. I feel soo bad.

But I'm wondering if something is just wrong. It seems slow, and doesn't like to do much, the last few days I haven't been able to spot it. So I don't know.

This isn't my kitten it is my mothers, and its a barn cat, we have too many and she'd just rather shoot it than take it to the vets, I feel bad and was wondering what could I do, or if there was anything I COULD do.

It has it's ups and downs .. I mean somedays it will be just fine, I just have to clean its eyes out, and others it just seems sooooo sick.

Sounds like an upper respitory infection. Totally fixable. A little amoxillan goes a long way. Could also be allergies. But most likely upper respitory. If you have a co op or a pet health store near by you can get some of it for little to nothing. A half a dropper full twice a day is what fixed mine when they had it. Also a little benedryl, the childrens kind, a fourth of a teaspoon will help with the matted eyes. Good luck and keep us posted

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I will try this, and anything else, I just rips my heart to pieces seeing it like this. Barn cat or not.

My vet said one time that if I had any childs Amoxillian left over (the bubble gum kind) to give them an eighth of a teaspoon twice a day and the benedryl. It worked everytime. I had so many rescue kitty's that I just couldn't afford to take them all to the vet. I was able to get the same medicine that they gave all the time for about 11 dollars. It beat the 80 dollar vet bill. They knew me well enough to diagnose my critters so I was able to treat them most of the time. My aunt still calls me to tell me the symptoms of her critters and me save her a vet call. I also know when to say hey I can't treat this take them in. Not bragging just giving the reason why I treated them and to say I had the vets blessing on it. It does sound like your mom's barn kitty has an upper respitory. It is the most common ailment in kitties and can kill them if not treated but it is a 100% treatable. It does need an antibiotic and the antihistamine to help dry it up. I wouldn't give up on it at all since this is treatable. Oh quick question do you have the any antibiotic ointment that the vet gives for your horses eyes? I have used the same ointment in the kitties eyes and it helps too. Gentamyicin is what I think it was called. the vet said it can be used for the kitties and dogs too.

Has the mother been tested for FIV or FELV? Cats that are positive will pass it to their babies and often the babies just fade away. They are poor doers and if they live often get sick a lot.

I was also going to suggest this. Also , with it being a barn cat, it could be so inbred, that there is something physically wrong with it. They often fade away .

I think you are thinking of Terramycin..This works great to help clear up eye issues..You might also be able to pick it up at a Vet supply store, of even some tack and feed stores carry it..

Good luck with you kitty...

Its doing better today, I I tried a few of the things you guys suggested. It was seeming to work, but I could not find the little guy tonight. Ugh, I feel horrible!

Joustingirl -- could very will be that, But doubt it is inbred. But alot of cats are, so could be that.

I really hope it makes it, I'll get some pics later.

THANKS EVERYONE!!

I love horsetopia

is he an indoor kitty or outdoor? I would be worried if he was indoor and you cant find him anywhere -you know how ugly it would be to see him dead

Anyways, hope he shows up somewhere - if not, well, RIP lil man.

You may think about catching the female and getting her to a cheap spaying place. Or having her tested for FELV/FIV. If she is positive any of the kittens she has in the future will meet the same heartbreaking fate and her existence will be not great either.
