Do talk to your vet first. Unfortunitly some won't even deal with ferals (wild). I have a fabulous vet that not only works with ferals, he makes special effort to do it! You normally have to make an appt. for a spay/neuter, he understands that you can't make an appt. with the trap/cat! He leaves alittle time each day for the "specials", and has several clients who trap including me.
You shouldn't need to touch the cat. My vet has us bring the trap in, injects a tranq. through the wires, takes care of business, then puts the cat back in the trap for you to release. Very easy for everyone. You just need to be able to pick her up the same day. The cats I take in get sterilized, vaccinated and tested.
If you have other cats in the barn, they are all at risk of disease. It could just be your cat has had all the litters her body can handle. Another reason for the short life-spans of wild cats, some just die trying to give birth, again and again.
