vocal cat

I have a siamese mix cat that is very vocal- he walks around all day/ night making noises, calling out...so, since there is no sleeping w/ him in the house, we kennel him and he quiets down so we can sleep. He is fixed, he is primarily an indoor cat. He has plenty of food and water.
He likes to go out for a while (then wants back in), so sometimes he crys because he wants out, but other times, he just talks to himself. I've read that siamese cats are in general a vocal cat.. Does anyone know any secrets that might work to get him to be quiet?

I know this sounds crazy but do you talk back to him? I have had many siamesse and bermese over the years...yes they are very vocal but highly intelligent. I found taking a few minutes and conversing with some love before retiring for the night does help. And if the kennel helps, it is a good thing. Another thought, would be a buddy.

Siamese are a vocal breed, just like bengals. Talking back can help to an extent, but only for a short term. We just deal with it - and may I suggest ear plugs at night.

My Simon, or 'Booger' as he's known, is also really vocal. He talks to me, himself, the ghosts in the house, the birds outside, the furniture, the walls...he just talks.

Usually, when he calls, I answer...and he comes running. He loves to be near me - honestly is attached to me and never more than an arm's (or leg's) reach away. Meezers bond tightly to their human, and will definitely fuss if they are separated.

You didn't mention how old your meezer is or how long you've had him...when Boogs was a wee one, he'd fuss constantly. He's 4 now, and only fusses when he can't find me.

I'd suggest two things. One, don't separate him from his human (you). Bring him to bed with you, and cuddle/snuggle him. See if that helps the nighttime calls. Two, another cat will help keep him company when you're not available to snuggle with...Boogs has a few cats he keeps company with, so even though I'm his main squeeze, when I'm not home, he's got others to occupy his attention.

Good luck - meezers can be hard to get used to, but they're such amazing creatures that it's totally worth it. They are very intelligent, very loyal, and very loving...

Best-
Noni

What Seerfarm suggested worked for me. I had one that would just holler and holler - especially right after I got home from work - she'd follow me around squalling and it was driving me crazy. When my vet told me to 'talk to her', I found out that if I spent a few minutes right after getting home to talk to her and love on her, most of the talking stopped. At the time he suggested it, I thought he was insane, because I thought I was talking to her all the time, but when I actually paid full attention to her and said a few loving words in response to the calls, all the fussiness went away and she was calm, happy, (and quiet!). Good luck!

I have a talker.

When he had to spend a few days at the vet a couple of months ago, I went to pick him up and said, "Bet you're glad to get rid of him, eh?" Hooo boy, you ain't kiddin'! The vet tech went on and on about how chatty he was and how they kept checking him to see if he had another urinary blockage. Which he didn't. He just liked to talk to them.

What I found though is that talking back actually encourages him. I went through a phase when he was young where he would call out and I'd say, "What?" He'd call again. We'd back-and-forth like this with me getting more and more frustrated thinking something was wrong with him, or he was in pain or there was a monster behind my shoulder . . . nope, he just likes to talk.

I can't remember even what it was that put this idea into my head, but for some reason one day I made up my mind to not talk back to him. Wow, HUGE difference! He would meow a few times, but when he was no longer getting a rise out of me, engaging me, he gave up.

Now we have short conversations from time to time, but I no longer have the absolute drive-you-up-the-wall constant whining.

He will still bite my heeals or the back of my legs when I try to cook though. Not enough attention to the kitty!

Well, my cat Rascal never shuts up. He also stares at me. Peers from behind something, stares at me until I look at him then jumps on the back of the couch and meow's at the same time, walks around the house meowing. Its really annoying. I HATE to be stared at, be it human or animal. I get all paranoid

I have a male cat that wouldn't shut up for the life of him. I tried EVERYTHING you could think of and nothing worked..but after a couple years of justs dealing with it, I got a 2 week old kitten and those two just clicked right away. So now 4 years later they talk back and forth to each other. Now the male cat doesn't wonder around at night meowing. I guess he was just lonely. Maybe thats the same thing for this one.

I dont think I could get a word or meow in if I tried talking to Rascal Its funny cause I love the cat and sometimes he will meow and meow and everyone will say "SHUT UP RASCAL" at the same time

I have bengals and they are so vocal-but I love it! I talk to them constantly and I actually wish they talked a little more (I'm weird, I know!) I do think that having two of them helps, a buddy can help take care of a lot of issues cats sometimes have.

Also, as others have said Siamese can YOWL. But try some of the solutions and let us know how it goes.

Jubilee (before she ran away) and my son (before he grew up and moved to be on his own) had an instant dislike of one another. Maybe it was because of this, or maybe she just felt like an opera kitty, that she would go down into the laundry room which just happened to be next to my son's room and where her meows *echoed* *echoeeed* *echoeeeeeed*. She would howl relentlessly for hours singing a painful song of "how I wish I could go catch mice" or a refrain of "hate is a really strong word, but I really really don't like you" ?

She particularly loved the quiet of the wee morning hours, perhaps she was a shy musician singing by the cover of night? I have other cats as well, each with a charming personality but no howling. But I think you become accustomed to the sounds of kitty rock in the dark - I would love to hear her melodic meows once again!

I've seen articles that cats do not use audible communication as much with each other as they do their humans. This either means that they think we are too dumb to figure out the nonverbal queues they offer or they just want to join in with their chatty humans.

I have the same problem, but usually they want something that usually shuts them up when I find out what wrong. I start saying things like 'bad cat' 'shut up you' too

Mine is 2 years old. He does have a buddy(about 6 year old female) so to speak, though she seems like she can care less of him...they don't act like buds. Maybe he needs a younger buddy who wants to play w/ him....My husband is his person...the other cat seems like she's chosen me to be her person (she is my daughter's cat). I will tell my hubby he should try talking and cuddling w/ him more. Will see if that helps
Thanks!

I would also echo the "talk back" sentiment. I have a female cat who constantly chirps and meows at me. I never realized that I talked back until I met my husband and he commented on it.

He's pretty creeped out how I can ask my cats to go into/leave a room and they'll do it.

Jezebel isn't very talkative (unless there is food involved) but Tigger was. My aunt has him now and I warned her before I gave him to her that he's a talker. He used to wake me up at about 3am romping through the house chirping and meowing. I had 2 cats so I don't think his thing was being lonely. I think he was just a talkative cat. He would always greet me at the door when I came home too and talk. He just liked to be talked to. My aunt says he does that at her house too and she also has another cat.
