Help with a homeless kitty

Ok so cats aren't my fortay. We had a cat get stuck in the engine of a U-haul and the owner said to just leave him. Well I couldn't do that so after an hour in the heat on the pavement with a co-worker...we pulled out a little black kitten who proceeded to shred her hand. Letting him go where we are would have been a death wish between wild dogs, no water and the interstate. This kitten couldn't be but about 7 weeks old. I'd say someone pitched him out on the road. He's in a box now with some water. Apparently I'll be taking him home until I figure out what to do with him. He looks healthy but he is very scared. I ran to the store and got him some kitten food and he scoffed it down. Didn't give him but a little because he is thin. We'll give him some more in a couple hours. He appears to have worms...can you get wormer without a vet? I can't swing the vet this week plus I'll be trying to find him a home, as I don't need a cat, but couldn't bear to leave him to die.

We saved a kitty a few weeks ago in the middle of a huge 6 lane "+" type intersection. A lady took him home after we all caught him.

So, I know what you mean about saving a kitty in the heat and interstate. Yes, you can get kitty wormer over the counter. Can you call your vet and just pick some up ?? I have seen pill form and powder form. Pills are definatly hard to get in. Since it is eating well, maybe the powder will be best ..... or maybe grind the pill into its food.

Soft kitten food, no dry. Maybe a little milk ??

Get an aluminum tin or something with a low lip on it and put some dirt in it so she/he has a litter box.

GOod luck with her. If you have a stuffed animal to put in her box, I would. she can crawl up and sleep next to it.

How about Freeway for a name ??

I have a cat at home that I just got about a month ago. He was a rescue case as well. But when I got him, he was UTD on everything vet wise. They will be kept seperate. I already bought a disposable litter box for him this afternoon, so I've got that covered. I sure will get a stuffed animal for him. He's coming around pretty quickly and getting more relaxed. We can rub him a hold him. He's still very tense but not shredding skin.

The stuffed animal just gives something for them to cuddle up to and help keep content.

Glad to hear he is starting to like you .... whats not to like..... food and love !!

You can get wormer at most stores, but I would really recommend against it.
It would be way better to wait until you can go to the vet, kittens that young can die from most wormers!
Bless you for taking him home and giving him a chance at life!
I wish you good luck in finding him a home, but if you deside to keep him I tell you the entertainment of watching two cats play is priceless!!

Been there, done that.

Don't worry about him eating too much; let him have as much food and water as his little belly will hold. If it extends, that's when he's full. A round tummy on a baby is a good thing.

Don't get wormers OTC. And hold off on getting wormers for a while. He's a little young yet, so he could go a few weeks before you need to worry about the worms maturing and becoming an issue.

Best recipe for babies...
1 can of wet kitten food
1 tablespoon plain unsweetened yogurt
a few baby kibbles

Mix it all togther, and give it in a flat dish. Do this about 4 times a day for about 5 days, and then you can go to just wet food. Make sure he has kibble at all times for free feeding...he might not want to right away, but he eventually will.

If he gets fussy (crying), tuck him into your shirt by your waist band. I've had more than one kitten decide that's the best spot on the planet. And yes, make sure he has something to cuddle with for when you're not there.

As for keeping him separate, I am assuming you're doing that because of issues like FIV/FEL, right? If so, you can check around and see what is the rate of occurrance in your area. I've brought many cats into my home who have not been tested, and everyone is just fine. The incident rate in my area is very low, so it's not the biggest concern I have.

If you are keeping him separate because of the other kitty, I'd say make introductions, but then let them work it out. It won't take long, and they'll be fast friends. And it's always better to have two cats than just one...they do keep each other company and reduce incidents of carnage because of boredom.

Good luck, consider keeping him as a friend for the other one, and let us know how you progress!

Best-
Noni
