Oh, No! Please pray...

Came back from riding, and noticed my MamaCat Esse had a bloody bottom. Didn't think much of it, because she sometimes has impacted anal glands, and they'll express blood. So I went to get her cleaned off, and noticed a gash either on her anus or vulva, about 1 inch circumference...pretty gross.

I cleaned it up, and noticed I can see tissue and bits of things...so we're headed off to the vet (I've called, and they're ready for us ASAP). I have NO idea how this happened; she's not pregnant, this isn't a tear from delivery; it's going to need stitches at the very least, and who knows what else.

I'm very scared. She's my cuddler (well, they all are...) and she's the MamaCat to several others here. Really not sure how this happened...took a quick look around for any blood or tissue, but nada.

So please say a prayer for my old girl...she's eating and drinking, but this has got to hurt something terrible. And I am very worried about infection, too, especially in that area.

Best-
Noni

Maybe she had an altercation with one of the other cats? One of ours used to hook the other in the anus, but never did any damage like that. Best wishes that she's okay.

I scooped Esse from her food dish, threw her into the carrier, and hauled a$$ to the vet. Was taken into a room immediately, and the vet came in. I told her I could see bits of her that weren't supposed to be seen, and the vet lifted Mamacat's tail, and, with a sharp intake of breath, said 'oh my goodness. I need her in the back room now.' Vet assistant came in, wrapped Esse up in a blanket, and took off with her. Never something an animal mom wants to experience; my heart dropped.

The vet came back in, and said that she had an abcessed anal gland that had ruptured/exploded, and the other one was very close to rupturing, too...very unusual in a cat. No surgery necessary, and they want to leave it without stitches for now to let it drain really really well; but they were going to 'clean the edges' and hotpack/flush it. They expressed the other gland, and gave her a lot of pain meds, and she's now on heavy oral antibiotics for the next 5 days; that's when she is to come back for follow-up. She's at significant risk of infection, but doesn't seem to have any right now, so that's good.

She does have the collar thing on her, and she's stoned out of her mind. I brought her inside, took her out of the carrier, and she took three steps, laid down, and mewed at me...and then closed her eyes and went to sleep. LOL. That collar is propping her head up; I wonder how long it will last on her?

My instinct was spot on...impacted anal glands. She showed NO signs of it, though, and like I said, it's uncommon in cats. No scooting (her usual indicator), no chewing/biting at her bottom, nothing at all. She cuddled like normal last night, too, so I had no indication anything was wrong. It just blew up.

I am so glad I noticed it...I don't normally look at my cats' fannies for things, but this was one of those moments that something caught my eye, and I took a good look; and then got her in for treatment.

It will be dicey the next few days with the risk of infection, but if she can go without infection, she should be healed in about 10 days...the vet did say to expect some potty accidents, but I just don't care about that if she's all right, you know?

Still biting my nails for a few days, but it is 'relatively' simple in the end, you know? Thanks for the prayers...if I can prevail upon you to keep them coming, so that she doesn't get infected, I'd really appreciate it.

Best-
Noni

PS: she just tried to get through the doorway; the collar hung up on the wall, and she is just sitting there, trying to figure out how to maneuver herself through the doorway. Bless her kitty heart...

I am so glad she is going to be fine! Does the vet think this will be a chronic problem for her now? Did he recommend a diet change? I helped with a surgery not too long ago to remove a dog's anal glands because she was having so much trouble with them, I hope it doesn't come to that, but it is an option that is out there.

Carri, I asked about change in diet, but the vet said it's so rare that it happens in cats that no change was needed; and that once healed, it likely will never happen again. I mean, she does occasionally get full glands, but expressing them while gross, is relatively easy. The vet said to just keep doing what I am doing, and that again, if it heals well, there should be no additional problems like this.

I'm just worried about infection. She'll keep the collar on, 'cause that's the type of cat she is. The others, however, have already shown great interest in "helping" her out of it. I wonder where it will be when I get back from class tonight? LOL.

GBarM, thanks for the hugs (and prayers)...I don't panic with blood and bits and things like this; but it sure scared me. I mean, that's my MamaCat, you know? My MamaCat. Her 'brood' was so thrilled to see her, until they realized the conehead thing was there. Now, her 'babies' are sitting there, staring at her...and she's curled up on a plastic lid (her favorite thing to lay on recently), and she's snoozing. She's so stoned...

Best-

It's so sad that she has to wear one of those cones - they just looks so sad! I'm glad to know that she can move with it! We had a little 1 month old kitty's eye removed, and she couldn't walk with the cone..it was sad. Glad she should be okay, and your MamaCat will be in my prayers!
