Can anyone else say not normal??

Ran across this ad on craigslist today....I am sure hoping it is a joke because it sure sounds like some inbreeding going on.

I know. I get flagged all of the time for no reason at all. I got flagged for a wanted ad for a three seat stroller! These people have no lives.

Wow! $200 for a 7 toed cat?? There was one for adoption a few weeks ago at a petsmart, and his adoption fee definately was not $200!

That listing probably should have been flagged. I am curious to as if it was actually a real listing or someone just messing with the CL police!

A neighbor has quite a few six-toed cats. They only have 6 toes on the front feet, with the extra being by the 'thumb' claw (not where the cat walks on, what's that called?). I guess I've heard of it pretty often, but it's sad if someone's purposely breeding for it to sell them.

Actually - there are such cats as 6 and 7 toed cats.

They are called "Hemingway Cats." The Ernest Hemingway mansion in Key West is overrun by cats, and they all have an extra set or two of toes. They are pretty rare, especially 7-toed, and can be very expensive if they are from the true Hemingway Cat lines.

I guess a mutation happened amongst that small population in Key West from being separated from the rest of the states - that led to extra toes on every foot! In FL they are not hard to find, but I imagine everywhere else they are more rare.

The mother of a friend of mine breeds Himalayan cats, which (I think?) are the end result of crossing Siamese and Persian cats. The cats sell for UPWARD of $1500 per kitten. Most of these have multiple extra toes - it's called polydactyly - and it's a little creepy. I'm not talking just one extra, either. It's like 2-4 toes EXTRA per paw. The paws look like some kind of weird cauliflower, and I'm always a little weirded out petting the cats, because I don't really want to touch those freaky paws. I wonder how they even move around, but they seem to do OK. OK enough to make MORE weird kitties. Apparently it's the way the breed goes - but like the OP said, it just sounds like some bad breeding, to me!

Yeah - I mean obviously the Hemingway cats did not get that way without a little (or a lot) of good ole' fashioned incest.

These are called polydactyl cats. My Radar cat is a polydactyl.

Yep, they are called polydactyl cats (meaning multiple digits). My very best kitty ever (Spliff, long story behind that name) was an extreme polydactyl. He had eight toes on each front paw and I think six on the back ones. On each of his front feet, one of the extra toes was recessed (shorter than the others) and then the next one over was longer - so he sort of had an opposable thumb on both front paws! He figured out how to open the door handles in one apartment where we lived...he could also hold a pen/pencil in his "hands"

could never get him to learn how to write though.....he was the most awesome kitty, I still miss him!

Interesting. As far as I know, having shown CFA for a long time, there is no breed that allows polydactyl cats in the ring, it's a DQ. I have no doubt that they're likely Himalayans, but... that's an awful lot of cash for a DQ, non breed type cat, yipes!

... then again, I see a lot of non-breed type cats and dogs going for large amounts, so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. *laughs*

Lots of cats are born with extra toes - it's actually one of the more common genetic situations, due to the fact it seems to be mostly a dominant factor. Breeding one Poly cat to a normal cat will usually get kittens with extra toes in the litter. It's actually more common on the East coast then the West.

Which is interesting, considering the tabby markings split the same - more Classic tabbies in the east and Mackerel in the West. In the Hemingway cats, the gene pool has tightened, sure, but bringing in an outside cat would like result in poly kittens when bred to one of the crew there.

I've seen some really fancy paws, though! Mellowdane has a big orange fellow, who's got lots of extra toes. His name of course, is... Dactyl.

Kinda neat, really. But... er, not two hundred dollar Craigslist neat, I'm afraid.
*grin*

I saw a 5-toed Border Collie Mix yesterday at work (with an extra dewclaw above the extra toe) on both rear feet....first I've seen....and the owner is thinking about having just the top dews removed because the dog is chewing at them.....but is leaving the fifth toes!
