neurotic cat?

I brought home a kitten that needed a home, my thoughts were 'barn cat', my husband took a liking to him and now he is 'house cat'. The kitten grew up going in or out of doors. He is a yr old now. We had him neutered but you'd never know it- he wails all the time as if calling out to a female. I believe he just wants outside, but he likes to go down to the hwy so we don't let him out anymore. In the meantime, he is driving me nuts w/ his crying.
Any suggestions what I can do short of kicking him outside again? He's an excellent mouser, and we find mice all over in the fields, so I'd rather love to send him out again!

I don't have any real advice, but I can certainly commiserate. If I ever get another housecat, it will be strictly indoors with never a chance to visit the great outdoors. Once my cat got a taste of the outdoors, he was hooked, and thus bored in the house. When he got bored, he ate. The more he ate, the fatter he got. When I put him on a diet - bingo. He yowled just like your cat does and there was nothing on earth that would make him stop short of letting him outside or filling up his foodbowl. Toys did not interest him... He's developed a little arthritis and I am planning to bring him back in for the winter and hoping I can find some way to occupy his time.

Maybe a kitten.

I have one cat that is just not happy indoors all the time, and 2 that live strictly indoors. If they want out, there is not much you can do to stop the yowling, short of spraying him with a spray bottle every time he makes a bunch of noise...

Thanks all for the replies. We do have one other cat in the house, it's a female and they do play but, I'm guessing he still misses outside. Maybe I could try to find a few more toys...or a cat tree or make a large outdoor kennel for him

He may just be a talker. I have a male cat who's neutered and about a year or so old. He talks all the time. Many times he'll just be sitting in the middle of the floor and start talking to see if anyone is listening. He's never had the opportunity to go outside, never shown any interest in going outside even though two of his "brothers" go in an out all the time.

Some cats are just talkers. I find if I hold a conversation with him he'll talk for a bit then go take a nap, but if I totally ignore him he'll keep talking till someone pays attention to him.
