Barn Cats

So I was at Pets Mart today and they had lots and lots of cats. I don't need another pet but I always go play with them. The lady working in there was practically in tears telling me that the pound is so overwhelmed with cats already this summer that she can't take anymore; most are being put down. The no kill shelters are full. They were waiving the adoption fees today to just get people to take them. So I called my trainer and she asked her if she wanted another cat and she said sure. She's already spade, shots, etc. I'm keeping her at home tonight but when I take her to the barn tomorrow, what should I do to help make sure she stays and doesn't just take off?

All I ever did was give them food when they first got there. Kittens are easier to keep around than introducing adult cats. I've never had a barn cat run off that I got as a kitten. Good luck!

Food. Canned food in the morning and at night for the first several days.

That's what worked for me!

I rescued a cat from work that was seconds away from being put down. She was so cute and I figured I'd only have the 3 barn cats. So I brought her home(I spayed her first ofcourse, all my guys are spayed/neutered)
All I did was bring her home and put her in a carrier in the barn to give the others a chance to get to know her without hurting her. I kept her in there for about a week giving her food/water litter and playing with her, also she still had to heal from the surgery. When I let her out I would only see her like once a week but I knew she was there. There was 2 times I had to bring her in the house cuz she got sick, but now I see her everyday and she follows me everywhere!

Good Job saving a cat. The barn is no warm bed by the fire but it's better then death! My girl loves it here!!

That was my thought too. I can't take on any more pets at home and I told the lady that. She was begging me to take her and I was very up front with the fact that she would be at the barn but she was fine with it. She'll be fed and have the attention from all the kids that ride.

Barn Cats

If you can keep her contained in the barn or in a tack room for the first week and bring her food, water and a litter box, she will learn that this is "home" and shouldn't take off. Make sure she gets plenty of attention too. Thank you for adopting!
