Rescued Kitty-Now What??

My daughter found a kitten at the gas station last weekend. I'm guessing it to be about 7-8 weeks old. She was filthy, covered in some kind of black sticky stuff on her face, ears and paws. She's got goopy eyes and a runny nose. She walks as if she were injured on her left side and didn't heal correctly. She's skinny as a rail and to top it off she has (had) ear mites and fleas. No surprise there!

Well, of course we had to bring her home and get her well again. She's eating fine and putting on weight. We've got her on antibiotics for her cold and she's really sweet and friendly. I feel a little bad because we're keeping her quarantined from the other cats and dogs and she has to live in the basement for now so she's a little starved for attention.

My problem is that I don't need or want another cat. Once we get her healthy how should I go about finding her a good home other than advertising in the newspaper? I usually keep 'em and don't really know how to go about finding new homes for strays.

Any ideas???

Could you post her info at your vets office?

That is sweet of you to care for her until she gets better.

First off, keeping her isolated is a great idea. You never know what kind of diseases the kitten may have that could spread to your other kitties. I would certainly get a Feline Lukemia test. Alot of strays can contract it. If she tests neg. that's great!

I would get her healthy, get her fixed and try to find a home for her. Try the paper, if she's litter box broke she'll have a better chance.

It's just too bad there are so many feral cats out there and so many are born homeless. Big thanks to you for taking one in!

Do you have a barn? Maybe she could be a barn cat (After she's fixed and vaccinated of course)

Best of luck to you and your new friend!

I rescued a litter and just finished bottle feeding everyone - finally. I hung an ad at work with pictures and told any one and everyone who would listen (Don't be shy - I even told strangers riding in the elevator that these adorable little beasts needed a new loving home. It worked. They will be old enough to leave in a few days now and they all have lovely new homes to go to.

Several years ago when we found orphaned babies (had to bottle feed)----I told my vet that I didn't need any more cats either and I told him they needed to find a home. His reply: "Looks to me like they already found one" The last one, Bubba Jo died May 2005. (age 15)

Um, I hate to break it to you, but I think you've come to the wrong place for advice on this matter.

Good luck with finding a new home.

Hee Hee, I knew someone was gonna say that.

My daughter is already attached to her new kitty. She's taking pictures everyday of kitty's progress and making a journal to chronicle her recovery. It's so cute and it's really fun to see what she writes and see the pictures showing the healthy changes in the kitty.

Good news, the antibiotics are working and little Sammie is feeling much better now. Maybe she can find a place in our barn like Iris_surreal_euphoria suggested. Trouble with that idea is we have a kitty now that was supposed to be a barn cat, but much prefers to sneak in the house when someone opens the door. He's really quick about it too. Darts in so fast that half the time we don't even know he did it. Darn cat. We already have a house cat, one supposed to be barn cat and now a new kitten.

Oh well, what's another one, right???

All of mine (4) are barn cats that love sleeping in bed with us.

You'll never notice having another in the house. Three aren't too bad.
Besides who else would give the kitten such a good home.

So, what is her name?

I agree with the rest - what's her name

We have 20 or so "barn" cats now rescues, strays, drop offs (NO, they do not come in the house) - What is 2 cats.... Besides, you wouldn't want to disappoint your daughter now would you!!

My daughter named her Sammy. She chose that name because we weren't sure if she was a boy or girl when we first picked her up. My daughter wanted to pick a name that could be for a boy or girl. So Sammie it is!

We have one black house cat named Jet. One "barn cat" named PJ and now we have Sammie. So that makes three.

I'll try to post pics soon. We're on dial-up and seriously, it takes about 1/2 hour to get one picture downloaded to Photobucket. I'm so impatient I hardly ever post pics. I miss my cable internet!!!!!

In the past I posted my sisters kittens on www.petfinder.com it is a free service.

There are people out there that would give her a loving home should you decide not to keep her. I had a lady drive two hours to get the most loving and adoring kitten. With your daughters journal of the kittens progress I'm sure it will tug at someones heart strings.
