Stubborn Little Brat!!

ARGH!!!

We rescued a kitten while out one day, planning to give her away in order to save her from a kill shelter. Well, the little brat stole our hearts and we ended up keeping her.

Of course, being responsible pet owners, we had her spayed.

I swear, this is the spay from H-E-Double Hockey Sticks.

(Let me state here, I do not think the spay was done wrong, nor is there anything wrong with how it was done, I think that for our particular cat, she needed something different. Anyways...)

In Austin they have a low cost mobile spay/neuter/vaccs clinic. To have our cat done through them was $40 (whereas with our normal vet? $150+).

Made an appointment back in April and took her in.

They 'glued' the site of incision closed and sent her on her merry little way.

Until, her belly got infected. Bad. And DANG did it SMELL!!! YUCK!!

So, took her back to the low cost clinic after a paniced call on a Sunday because her belly looked awful. They gave her antibiotics after checking her out, and of course, recommended an E-collar for her.

Okay, done and done. That trip (not including gas) only cost me $12, so I'm still ahead!!

We move to Kansas, and, I'll be darned if the little brat can't get AROUND her E-collar and LICK the site still!!! ARGHHHH!!!!

Find a vet here, and take her in and explain the situation. Watch the vet pull some globs out of the wound area. Gives us more antibiotics ($10), but, doesn't charge me for an office visit ($25).

Still ahead!

She still is licking around the E-collar (I think we leave it on her more to slow her down than anything else). Site looks better for a bit. And then, goes south again.

Oh for crying out loud!!!

BACK to the vet for another surgery ($83) to go back into the original incision site and remove some fibrous growth she had happening, and of course, more pills (included in surgery price).

I'm almost breaking even here I think.

Looked fine, and I took her in to have the stitches taken out. Hmmm, some of them look like she's been chewing at them. Here, have more antibiotics ($12), smear some Vicks Vaporub around the site and put some hot sauce to deter her from licking.

And, as I'm sitting here, what do I hear? Her little pink tounge scraping on her E-collar as she licks the area anyways.

*seethe*

Stupid cat!!

Someone remind me again why we spend all this money on them when they refuse to just accept the treatment to make them healthy again?

Oh yeah...cause they're so cute when they look at us with love and trust.

Darn their wiley ways!!

(Here's a picture of her when we first rescued her)

If she can lick around the collar, it isn't big enough. I love her face - so cute! And I'm not usually fond of torties.

She's yoga cat, I swear!! It was the biggest one the vet had and extends well beyond her head. Freakiest thing to watch that cat lick herself.

I'm with you; I don't like torties. It's why we say she's a heck of a smart cat; we already had 2 cats, and somehow this one managed to get us to fall in love with her and keep her.

Cute kitty! Hope she feels better soon and stops running up the vet bills!

I too have a $1000 kitty...she ate 7" of curling ribbon and had to undergo an emergency endoscopy to have it removed.

She was worth it though.

When my neighbor's cat died- no kidding- *drumroll* they paid $4k for a cat coffin. Lined in satin and everything . What some ppl do for their pets. (Oh yeah- get this- the cat's owner was a guy! )

Hee hee hee! What a cute cat is right! It's these crazy characters that inevitably weasel their way into our heart and forever leave a deep impression on us! God bless them for their crazy ways!

Oh Shayla- Torties are a cat of thier own. Inevitably anything you want then to do they won't, anything you don't want them to they will and if you ever try to force the subject they BITE! LOL. She is stinking cute though, thats what gets you every time (trust me I am laughing because I have been there). If you can get it try Variton cream around the incision, bitter tasting and generally deters most lickers. You will need to pick it up from the vet though but it is inexpensive.

She is beautiful..reminds me of one we had that was rescued by my BIL along with the rest of her litter after the mom was HBC. My whole family loves animals...I'm the only "horsey" one though.

I love Torties, but they have a reputation for being crazy!
Heres some funny reputations I've heard about different colored cats..
Calicos- Always girls, and always crazy
Orange Tigers-Tough as nails, but lovable
Solid White- Somewhat snobby, but loyal
Solid Black- Somewhat flakey, and unpredictable
Black and White - Mischevious! and premiscious!
Tiger Stripes- Perfectly fine if you let them nap in their chair all day

WOW!!! I can't believe that some people have the money to shell out for their cats!!

Especially deceased ones!!

So far, we haven't invested all that much into her really and I can't complain about the spay issue; I really believe that EmanciPet (which is the name of the organization which did her spay) did a great job, it's just that she's such a stubborn little puss that she's caused it to drag on and on!!!

She's a little lovebug though and very much a "Momma's Girl"; so much so that I can't even use the bathroom in peace. She's right there trying to crawl up onto my lap. It's kind of hard to use the facilities with a cat on your lap!! Or, she likes to "pet" us. I have to say that she's got one heck of a personality on her (not that our other cats don't), and while she's my "ugly baby", I love her dearly.

I think it's those eyes.

Anyways, we're almost done with this round of antibiotics, another round to the vet to check her belly, and maybe just a bit more in the E-collar and then HOPEFULLY our little conehead can go back to looking like the rest of our "normal" cats!!!

Thanks everyone for saying such sweet things about her. Weird thing was that when we were trying to give her away, nobody would take her!! Ahhh well, I guess it was fate/destiny/ka that we ended up with her in our family.

RodeoBrat..... those color meanings must be true. If I go for solid black, or black and white.... since Cat only has one little white patch.... they both match her!

So far I have a $100 cat.

She got lucky. A tie on a blood vein came undone during surgery when they were getting ready to close her up... she almost bled out right there on the table because they couldn't find it right off.

She refused to wear anything to protect her belly... took out her own stitches. I was able to stay by her and keep her from doing it too early though. I think she lasted 8 days until she got the last 3 out.

I used Neosporan to keep her out of it. Yucky and goo-ey but good for the wound site if you can wait a few days to put it on. Can't go on fresh incisions, too deep in the tissue I think.

Thats such a cute story I can just imagine you sitting at home thinking, "Finally! she can't get to those stitches" and then here comes the licking noise. I think those color reputations are true! I have a calico and she is such a sweetheart. She meows to get in my room when Im sleeping, the house when Im home, the bathroom when Im in there. Jeez its like having a kid. I can't see spending $1000 on a cat or more but I would skip some meals to do it. Everyone around here is too cheap to pay for the vet for their animal and just puts it down. So sad. Good luck and hope she feels better soon!

I think those color traits are true too Mandelyn! I had an orange cat who was so mean to the dogs, but loved us family members!

Shayla, I would be in trouble if I had to dish out anymore money to the vet! I wish people who needed to credit check me would just check with the vet!

AHAHAHHAHAAA!!! I like that!! "Don't check my credit report, ask my vet!!" (or insert addiction here [mall/shoe store/whatever])

I am SO grateful that this vet here is inexpensive AND willing to let me just come in so they can look at her and not charge me for the visit. I think, next to the barn we board at, I'm going to miss that the most!! I don't like their "We don't do appointments, just walk ins." policy, but, for the price, I can't complain. Which must explain their full waiting room everytime I go in!!

Her belly is looking SO much better, so I'm hoping that in a week or two, she can stop being our little "cone head" and go back to normal!!
