I must be a decrepid animal magnet

First it's the little gimped up dog, and now it's a cat! Went into the basement to grab some kindling wood, and I see what I thought was a coon scurry into the back. We've been leaving the outside door open to air it out before winter.

I pause, and the supposed coon goes "meow". So I call it in my best "I like cats" voice, and out it comes. Gimped up rear end... I can't tell if it's a hip thing or spinal thing, but it shows no pain. It walks crooked, can't use one leg, the other compensating.

I put it out in the basement and went back indoors... really, with the dogs and all, this is no place for a cat. Went back out a little while later, and it's sitting by the basement door.

So I fed it, now it thinks it lives here. I called the pound, they will only accept cats, won't come get them. So when my husband comes home with the car I guess we'll run it down there if they're still open.

I just don't know what else to do about it! It was someone's pet, has a flea collar. I named it Bones, because that's all it is, and that's the only reason I fed it. Nothing should ever be that hungry.

We don't have the cash for a vet visit, and I think it REALLY needs to see a vet. Last time I rescued a kitten though, it ran $120. I put an add on craiglist to maybe catch the eye of anyone who would help. Nothing so far.

It's trying to convince me it can stay, but it'll have to have that chat with my dad, and he's definately not a cat guy.

What's with these animals showing up here? Never happens when my dad is alone, only when I show up do the animals follow!

Yeah, it's why I tried to shoo it away instead of feed it! Then it limped off, think of a horse going sideways, that's how it moves. No pain though? I'm thinking nerve damage or neorological.

Caught my dad holding it a couple minutes ago outside, and he TOLD me to scramble it an egg after I told him I fed it twice, then suggested warming up some rice milk for it. So, it's sucked up to the head of household.

Named it Bones. He/She/It... dunno. No cat stink from spray, so we're thinking girl.

A friend of my dad's is coming to look at it, she's a single lady, no harm in going from 2 to 3 cats, right? LOL

Then dad said to give it a box in the front room for over night if she doesn't take it. That's like... the farthest a cat has EVER been to being indoors. Not one has ever made it past the basement. Front room? It must have purred sweet nothings into my dad's ear.

I'm not a cat person, but I can't help but feel sorry for it. Dad made a comment about not giving the dogs dinner...... he's REALLY not a cat person. But this cat, won't take no for an answer. So.. if the friend doesn't take it, we'll see what happens.

You an me ar about the same, a cat came here last year, skin and bones and with a flea collar. i fed it because I was feeling sorry, now it is here and lives outside and goes under the house and I have a heating pad and a box on the breezer in my mud room, which now I have to leave the door open.
And a 8 lb doxie that I was taking care of for the neighbors along with a pit bull, I found a home for the pit and now the doxi is looking up at me as I type into HT

Ah.....MY PEOPLE! I just started volunteering at a local cat shelter. 2 days, and I just brought home a cat. Just.... what I need.... but the cat needed me. Sigh...

Sounds like your kindness and feelings for animals is genetic... YOUR DAD HAD THE CAT IN HIS LAP??? The animals can tell... they find US.

My dad gave it scrambled eggs for breakfast, I saw the evidence!

I emailed about 6 local cat rescues, one emailed back saying they forwarded it on to the intake people. I guess they filter the emails to find truelly needy cats and not just fine cats who's owners are too lazy to search out a good home?

Bones was perkier this morning, and slept in her box all night. She's been sunning and grooming herself on the front sidewalk, as if she lives here or something.

If I don't hear back from the rescues today or tomorrow then we'll go buy cat food I guess.

What's the best thing to feed a starved cat to have it gain some weight?

Cats respond pretty well to about anything when they're starved. But in my experience cheap canned cat food mixed with some decent quality hard dog food works wonders.
Since you have big dogs I doubt the kibble would be small enough so if you decide to use some, crush it up a bit.

I've used the above on a good dozen dumped and starving cats at my parents house with great success.

yeah, just don't go too heavy on the canned stuff, or she may get the runs and not get outside quickly enough....then you are left with a mess..
she sounds as though she has made a spot for herself.....poor thing.....

Lol, I COMPLETELY understand! At the farm I typically have a herd of cats following me wherever I go, one of the kittens rides on my shoulder and whispers that she would be a really good house cat but I've been blocking her out, lol. I crouched down in the field playing with one of the yearlings yesterday and within moments I was surrounded, lmao.
