DLSD in peruvians

Since there has been some talk about it in some other horses I thought I would ask the previous owners of my 2 main characters if they had tested them before I bought them. Please know I am still new to this and am learning everyday something new. I just thought I would share an article I recieved today about it.

http://www.ryrusa.com/articlesdsld2.htm.

I still need to do far more research to be able to handle an educated conversation about it. So folks educate me

Thought it would be better to provide some great links for you to read a bit more about the disease...

This last one is actually the DSLD Research Organization and they may be the most helpful.

Well, this is a major reason that I have the Colombian Paso Fino horse and not the Peruvian. I have known four people with Peruvians, and every single one of their horses broke down with DSLD, ringbone, or other structural problems. These horses do not seem to stay sound for very long according to my limited observations.

I think part of it is the long sloping pasterns (the Colombians have always valued strong, short pasterns in the horses, perhaps knowing that what you give up in breeding for sloping pasterns for smoothness, is soundness, over time).

There is something else though, and it seems that the Peruvian breeders did a lot inbreeding over the years to establish the breed. There are many father daughter type breedings and concentration on one ancestor. DSLD is not just a joint problem, but, is a systemic, perhaps autoimmune problem. It has occurred in other breeds as well (quarter horses and thoroughbreds, I think), and may be a common mutation in many breeds of horses. Though I do not know any other breed with the prevelance so high as the Peruvian horse.

I read an article where one breeder said he can predict the DSLD in Peruvian horses by watching their rear movement. He thinks it can be identified, predicted and greatly reduced in incidence by restricting breeding based on structural soundness alone, without, having to establish a genetic marker.

Donīt get me wrong, I love the Peruvian horse, and would have a couple, along with my Colombian horses if it were not for the prevelance of DSLD in the breed. They really are the most smooth, most naturally moving horse, and have more gait extension than the Colombian horses overall.

Is there a test for DSLD? I heard one was in the works but I didn't think it was reliable yet?

Interesting article. I've read so much conflicting information, I'm at the "I don't know what to think" point. I do think there's a flood of recent information out there.

Some people insist that DSLD is over diagnosed in Peruvians, and that the breed has other different suspensory problems, which are not DSLD, but, just structural breakdown due to faulty conformation.

The best thing is to ask your vet about how they look and available testing.

There is not like a 'blood test' that shows DSLD, the best thing to do is to have your vet do a soundness exam and ask his opinion on your horses.

I have a 1/2 Peruvian mare I've had for 6 years and never had a problem, nor does it look like I will ever have a problem, with her legs. I have seen one mare put down for DSLD in my two years training Peruvians.

It really depends on the lineage. We get a lot of imports from Peru and they don't seem to have the problems that 'American' Peruvians have. Good luck with the Peruvians though - they have the best personality

I had two related AQHA mares come down with DSLD one year. I had purchased them both the same year and bred them and they were carrying their first foals for me. It is a terrible disease and very very painful for the horses. I removed them both from my broodmare herd as soon as I found out what was wrong with them. Sad, as they both were wonderful mares but they sure had a host of problems from the disease. One had severe eye problems and muscle wasting but not the dropped pasterns and the other one had the bad dropped pasterns.
