DLSD in peruvians
Since there has been some talk about it in some other horses I thought I would ask the previous owners of my 2 main characters if they had tested them before I bought them. Please know I am still new to this and am learning everyday something new. I just thought I would share an article I recieved today about it.
http://www.ryrusa.com/articlesdsld2.htm. I still need to do far more research to be able to handle an educated conversation about it. So folks educate me

Thought it would be better to provide some great links for you to read a bit more about the disease...

Some people insist that DSLD is over diagnosed in Peruvians, and that the breed has other different suspensory problems, which are not DSLD, but, just structural breakdown due to faulty conformation.
The best thing is to ask your vet about how they look and available testing. |

There is not like a 'blood test' that shows DSLD, the best thing to do is to have your vet do a soundness exam and ask his opinion on your horses.
I have a 1/2 Peruvian mare I've had for 6 years and never had a problem, nor does it look like I will ever have a problem, with her legs. I have seen one mare put down for DSLD in my two years training Peruvians. It really depends on the lineage. We get a lot of imports from Peru and they don't seem to have the problems that 'American' Peruvians have. Good luck with the Peruvians though - they have the best personality |

I had two related AQHA mares come down with DSLD one year. I had purchased them both the same year and bred them and they were carrying their first foals for me. It is a terrible disease and very very painful for the horses. I removed them both from my broodmare herd as soon as I found out what was wrong with them. Sad, as they both were wonderful mares but they sure had a host of problems from the disease. One had severe eye problems and muscle wasting but not the dropped pasterns and the other one had the bad dropped pasterns.
