dumb question about mare?with a pic!

i dont breed and never have dealt with a broodmare.so dont roll eyes at my stupid questionsi bought a pony mare yesterday.she does not have a milk bag.her vulva (aka kitty)is slack and looks out of shape.its not gaping just long and slack looking.shes not real old and is plump but not obese.im guessing her to be 12-15.could this mean she had a foal and possibly lost it.after milk sack goes away would it still look like this for awhile?or maybe, hopefully NOT could she have been bred in recent past?too many babies?or sign of trouble to come?i have no history on her.i put ? here instead of health cause it appears that this is related to a broodmare type of issue.teats are tight and up where they belong.i had a maiden mare that did this but that was when she got real old and lost weight.looked bad.this pony isnt like that at all.

if her teats are tight and small I'd assume she's never had a baby or hasn't in many years. If her vulva is slack she might be in heat. Has she been winking? Some mares just have long open conformation right there.
Usually after a mare has had a foal that she nursed her teats will never be as small or tight again and some even look like they have a permanent bag if they've had a couple.

I would bet it's more conformational than anything. but if she was just bred before you got her now is the time to terminate the pregnancy if you don't want the baby. I've never noticed my mares looking longer there after breeding live cover.

Ponies are really good at gaining weight, she could have been a real blimp at some time before you got her, and lost a bunch of it. Or she could have been pastured with a bunch of study geldings.

Then again, she could just be built that way.

ok.i appreciate the input.oh funny.i never thought about the rowdy geldings.i saw that and just got freaky thinking baby thoughts.if thats what she ends up being,i wont terminate it.that shot can be nasty.we'll just deal with it.my dad has a nice barn and lives minutes from me.if it would come to that.we just have lean tos and 1 pasture everyone shares.not good baby raising.was dumb ? but things just didnt look normal.

There are no dumb questions, only dumb people who don't ask any questions.

Well I know here on our farm every mare is different. We have some ponies that are high and tight and some are long and loose. Just the way they are built. Overweight mares will get puffy bags and puffy in front of the udder. Also mares on green grass will get small bags that have fooled many people into thinking they are in foal when they are not.

Every mare is different. I have never noticed a mare looking more "slack" after breeding, so I wouldn't expect that to mean that she is bred. She might have foaled before, but it is hard to tell. Her udder would not be big unless she was close to due. If you are in doubt, get a vet to palpate her. It doesn't cost much and will settle your mind either way. If there is a stallion on the property you could just try teasing her regularly to see if she comes in season, but that isn't the most reliable method as some mares will have a false cycle when in foal, while others will no cycle regularly this time of year.
