Colicy Broodmare

This is my mares 3rd foal that she is pregnant with. She is at the four month mark or so and is acting colicy tonight. Bowl movements are good, stomach is still girgling. I put her in tonight away from the rest of the horses so I can watch her. She is laying down, swishing her tail and laying on her side a lot. Still eating but not rolling.

She acted this way about 3 times with her first foal who was a filly. This is going to be a filly as well.

Have any of you experienced colicy mares at certian stages of pregnancy?

Last years pregnancy was quiet as can be and not a lick of acting colicy at all. Maybe it is a filly thing!

I cannot advise you on the pregnancy thing, but have you put a call into the vet? I really really would if I were you, just to touch base with them. This mare is preggo so extra precautions.

Definately call the vet should never wait to see if a colic resolves itself, I've lost a mare that coliced 2 weeks before her due date, she got a twist & didn't make it to surgery, colic in pregnant mares should be treated with urgency.

Well she is back to normal this morning. I checked on her every few hours through the night and she was fine. I think it was the foal moving around. Thanks for the input!

My AQHA mare colicked like that with her first pregnancy and she ended up losing the foal. It sucked! Now she is in foal again and I watch her like a hawk. Im so paranoid about it. Hey, I have to be its her first and going to be my stallion's first baby on the ground here in 4 months. Wow, only 4 months left to go already! Holy smokes!

During her first foal she did this at like 4 and 8 months and then was fine and the foal was healthy as can be. I bet the foal was just moving around and such.

My paint mare does this also when pregnant. My vet put her on Fast Track - I'm probably spelling it wrong, but it is a probiotic and helps with her digestion. There are several different kinds on the market - I bought it at the feed store and I think I've seen it or another brand at Tractor Supply. But, it's cheapest online like on Valley Vet or one of the others. Good luck!
