DNA Tests for color

Another question for the color guru's.

I've now asked lots of people what they think Mr Gilmore is, and have had all sorts of replies, all but one polite

Now I really, truly don't care what color he is, he could be purple and have to wear a bag over his head in public, it wouldn't make any difference to the bond that we are now building between us, , but I'd still like to resolve the color question.

Someone suggested that a DNA test would settle it once and for all, but the research I've done doesn't show anything that would say if he was an Appaloosa, Pintaloosa, Walkaloosa, Tobiloosa, Andaloosa (that would be a great one)

So, I'm told that I can get tests done for $50 to $100 but how, who, where, and will I get some answers???

Go to UCDavis' site. www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/. That should link to it.

I wouldn't trust any generic test that you can get from a website. I'd definitely try it through UC Davis or some other recognized vet facility.

Good luck! It will be interesting to see what Mr. Gilmore is. Whatever he turns out to be, he is gorgeous.

The above link IS for UC Davis. You can order the test online, they ship the package to have the hair pulled and you send it back....

Just wanted to clear that up.

I have not heard of a test that will tell you his breed but will tell color. Good luck!

Sorry, my mistake. I knew that was the UC Davis site, I just meant you would be able to get to the color testing info from there.

There are color tests out there for the Paint patterns but not for your App patterns. I believe that UC Davis can test for the presence of Sabino and for Tobiano markers. They can also do base coat colors which would tell you if he is homozygous or heterozygous for black, agouti, cream.. things like that.

That's what I was wondering reading the info on the site, I was getting confused I'm not sure if the test will tell me anymore than we are guessing, in which case why would I do it?

Personally I wouldnt bother spending the $$ to get him color tested. The only reason I would color test is for breeding my horses or something like that.

I still think he has 3 patterns/colors. Tobiano, Varnish Roan and Blanket on a bay base coat. OR he could be Tobiano and Blanket on a Bay Roan base coat.
