preg mare raging heat

My mare is 5 months pregnant. I had her checked last at 3 months and she was still in foal. Today she's in raging heat and squatting in front of another mare just asking for it. She has done this before while pregnant but should I get her rechecked anyway or do you think she's just a little hussy?

Have you bred her before? I know some mares are ready and willing all through pregnancy but for piece of mind you might want to get her vetted again.

yes this is her 4th foal and she's done this before it just seemed kind of ridiculous

I have seen mares do this and it makes a person crazy because you have had them vetted but if it were me, I know it is another expense I would have her vetted again, or you could just wait it out. They make you a nervous wreck wondering. very few mares behave as intensely as yours but I have seen it. They ususlly settle as they get deeper into the pregnancy.

I've had several mares like that. I bought a mare once, and questioned the previous owner if she was bred. He said "oh no", she can't be. We brought her to a stallion 3 times, and she stood each time and did the whole "I'm in heat" thing. The last time, the stallion owner asked if she was already bred as she had a small bag. We again called the previous owner and he again said No, can't be. 5 weeks later, we had a real nice newborn filly on the ground. But she was a screwball...Called the prev. owner again and described the baby and his reply was "oh, that must have been the son of the mare that did it", so Yes, they can and do come in heat while pregnant. Her previous 2 year old had bred her.

I got a nice Two Eyed Jack mare, that had been bred to a AQHA champion because she kept comeing in heat. She had a really nice filly from that breeding. She also gave me three other good foals, before she coliced and had to be euthanized. So yes some of them do keep coming in heat.

There is a hormone released during pregnancy that can simulate heat in many horses - it's very common for them to display to some degree during pregnancy

There are also instances of submissive urination with mares where it may look to the casual observer that the mare is in heat, but is actually not.

However, if there are any questions at all, the vet is the one to talk to.

Our little chestnut mare will tease studs during pregnancy. But for peace of mind, we always double and triple check with the vet to make sure she's still pregnant.
