I EVA tested and vaccinated mine to be on the safe side. I don't know that it is a common practice here in Texas though as it took my vet a month to get the vaccine for me

Equine Viral Arteritis. Stallions can be carriers of the disease and pass it on in their semen. Which is why it's good to test for.

No stallion, but if I did it would only seem responsible to make sure your stallion is in the clear. Like a breeding exam on mares and keeping up on all her vaccines.

Was just wondering as the vets office I used to test and vacinate my stallion says I am the only stallion owner worried about this when I tested him and vacinated him this year. Not sure why they do not think this is important enough to educate all the other stallion owners in the area.

Our vet figures that because we don't reside in a high risk area, most stallion owners don't worry about it. But we put our EVA results next to our HERDA results on our ads.

The thing is that there are some states that you can not ship semen into with out it. It limits what you can do with your stallion. Also if people are not educated about it then ship semen from an un tested stallion that happends to be positive then you put not only your mare/foal at risk but also if you have a stallion now he is exposed b/c you did not know about it and have him tested and vacinated.

I ship a lot of stallions/semen in and out of here. SO for me even though it may not be a problem here it could be if I get a shipment of semen in for a mare here to be bred. I can not believe I am the only one who ships even a few shiped semen a year.

I think it is just a good practice something that the vets should take more seriousely. Oh well at least mine is tested and vacinated.

I don't ship semen out, just in. I am trying to persuade my hubby to geld our stallions. The reiner would make a great youth horse for my son. Plus, I'm in the middle of changing my program. I want a better bred stallion and preferably with a good performance record, if he doesn't have one, he'll get one.
I test and vaccinate because I don't want to risk my horses, or those of others. It's part and parcel of being a responsible breeder.

I agree that is why I do not understand why so many people do not do it??? Supose they just do not want to spend the $$ on it. To me it is a small price. Nice thing is even if the mares are exposed they are not carriers they will shed the virous. Just have to keep them away for the boys and try again next year. Just hate to loose that year.
