APHA vs Appendix

As I mentioned in an other thread, there are two weanlings I am interested in. Both of them have the same daddy. The APHA weanling comes also from a nice Halter mare. But somehow I like the idea getting a Appendix - I dont know enough about Appendix, but just figured that horse would be suitable for Jumping and HUS as well as Western classes. Or am I wrong with that? Do Appendix have smooth and flat knee movement, or do they have usually more a Warmblood type of gaits? And what about their temperament: do they have more get up and go? Do you guys think I would do good getting a Appendix if I want to do Western and English shows and have a horse that loves the challenge of different trainings and shows? Or would also a half-halter bred horse being capable of doing it all?
I know many questions .....hope you can give me some help here

I don't think you can base your choice on generalizations. Both can be very quiet or either could be more active/athletic. I think you have to look at them both individually their traits & those of the breeding. I have a superior halter mare she is not what I would call slow halter horse. Quiet & listens well When riding but she prefers having a job to do,not the rail horse type. She is more busy minded. Her daughter is similiar in some ways but better mover & lazy/quieter mindset much more cut out for an all-round.{some of her WP lines showing through}.
I know it will be harder to know on a weanling but take a look at the immediate pedigree it may help tell about performance ability.Do they have any older siblings that may help you too.

That's like saying all paint horses are great with cows. you have to judge the individual horse

Agreed. That's like saying Arabs are crazy and Appaloosas are stupid. It all depends on the horse.

Appendix horses usually are the ones you see in the HUS classes BUT they are usually more than 50% TB. And the ones who are winning more than normal are teh ones who are well over 16hh...is this weanling giong to finish at least 16hh?
A friend had an appendix mare-but the TB was 5 generations back-she looked like a well built little (15hh) halter horse. You want to ensure the TB is alot closer (first or second generation) so you can get that TB movement that is being sought after.
You won't be restricted from any classes in the AQHA.

crazy arabs, stupid apps, maniacal ponies, hot TBs, and vicious SBs...why they are the ones who keep life interesting...you never know which one you're gonna get lol.

I had an Appendix mare I raised from a yearling. She grew up to be a whoppin 17 hh, had a baby cradle canter, smooth long trot, she gave the impression of being gaited. She was predictable unpredictable. There was always a constant war of more hyper thoro. and calmer quarter horse. YES! Most Appendix horses were bred to do it all. But as the other poster's said, you have to look at the individual horse and decide what you want to do most! There are crazies, and super calm horses in every different breed, as well as the ones that do things that they aren't supposed to (like "Teddy"O'Conner for instance!).
