Brining horse into the US for breeding/hormone shots?

I am looking to take my horse from Canada to the US to be bred maybe next year. I was thinking of breeding her to a haflinger but found a gorgeous arab with a nice pedigree not to far from me!! Anybody know the procedure you go about to go to the states to get a horse bred and then bring them back? I would probably go with a hormone shot to put her into heat when I was ready to breed her. She hasn't really shown a heat this summer but is only in with one gelding who could care less and I know she isn't bred. What are the options for hormone shots (or what ever they are called) and what are the pros and cons you guys have found? Thanks

AI is not an option? Sure would be easier, and all things considered, I'm going to guess cheaper too.

That is I guess part of what I want to know too. How many times do you have to AI a mare? it is 300 or 350 from the breeder plus whatever the vet charges here and from what I have heard is alot. He is really good at reproductiion though! It will cost me about $400 to drive her down and back plus the certificates I would need.

The number of times you have to AI the mare really depends on a few things.

1.How good is your vet at knowing when she is ready
2.How Furtile is the stallion when shipped
3.And or course your mares ability to concieve

The first two are the biggest factors. We went through a lot of vets not having a clue this breeding season so had to ship to a couple mares twice. But with each shipment they would have been able to inseminate 2-3 times as our stallions counts stayed high. This was even with his "stuff" being shipped from Michigan to Washington state. The person collecting and processing the "shipment" on the stallion end plays a factor as well.

She is a maiden mare so I dont know how well she concieves and that vet here is a reproduction specialist in AI and ET. He is hard to get sometimes because he is very busy. The horse has been collected a few times but mostly does live cover. Because he isn't far away I thought it would probably be easier to haul down that do AI. So far it sounds like I only need a coggins and good bill of health to go down and back.
