I didn't know this about the AQHA....

This is for all of those QH lovers who aren't too fond of Arabians. And anyone else who might not have realized this.

Did you know that as recently as the 1950's, approved Arabian stallions were allowed as an outcross source?

I am reading the book Arabian Legends, and of course was a bit familiar with Indraff, but I did not realize he was an approved AQHA outcross stallion. He had two offspring in particular, out of the same QH mare Cotton Girl, that did well, both AQHA registered. Indy Mac did not garner any AQHA points, but Indy Sue did, in 6 different events. Stadium jumping being one of them.

I always knew the QH breed, like the TB, has had some Arabian influence.... I just didn't realize that it was that recent.

Interesting stuff.

Do any of you happen to know when the book was closed to Arabian stallions?

I knew that in most horse breed books it states that Thoroughbred, and Arab blood played a role in the development of the quarter horse aswell as some andalusian and australian stock horse blood

It's actually funny to see the look some people give you when they aren't fully educated on the breed and origins of the aqha that say they hate arabs and tb's when you tell them the qh has there blood coursing through there viens

Thats where some qh's get "baby doll" type heads I actually had a qh mare at one point that looked pure arab had a friend out once to ride and gave her my mare top ride and she said sure your giving me a crazy arab she didn't believe me till I show'd her the papers that she was infact a qh she simple took after her ancestors more then others

I didn't know that the Arabs were that close on the quarter horse. Very interesting.

This is a great thread, Thanks TDH! And Geebs, Gerald is the same way about Arabs but he just loves, loves, loves those baby-doll heads I can't wait until he gets home, this is gonna be fun

Our Appaloosas have QH in them four generations back and therefore have TB and Arabs back there too. I'm of the opinion that the breed is about phenotype more than genotype, if ya know what I mean. And that changes with the "fashion"

This book is put out by the Western Horseman, and several of the pictures used were originally run in the Western Horseman "back when". Now, I'm not a subscriber to that one, but I'd bet a healthy chunk that the times they run any photos/articles about Arabians are far and few between these days. The breed is far gone from the family horse it used to be - at least much of what wins in the show ring now, is.

I always thought that Arabians were an ancestor to many contemporary breeds

That's just it - I think a lot of people, in kind of an obscure way, know that some where, a hundred years ago or more, there's a great likelihood that Arabians had an influence on their breed of choice.

What I found remarkable is just how recently the Arabian has influenced the QH breed. And of course ironic, when I know (in real life too) so many fans of the QH who don't give a rats patootie for the Arab.

Still was hoping someone would know just exactly when the QH Association stopped allowing Arabs as outcrosses.... wonder how a body could find that out?
