Color ? on greys

My stud colt (grey) is out of a grey sire (solid colored, was born black and stayed that way for years) and a grey dam (flea bitten). What are his (the stud colt) chances of being homozogus (sp) grey?

50/50 chance of him being homozygous.
Either both parents threw their gene or only one did-only testing will tell.

Where is the best place to send hairs to be tested? Also how expensive is it?

Actually, unless one or both parent(s) was homozygous grey, he has a 25% chance of being homozygous grey. Unles I am having a brain fart Monday...

I've always used UCDavis for testing, but I don't believe they offer a test for grey.

Here's their website: http://www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/services/horse.php

assuming both were hetero for grey

25% homo grey
50% hetero grey

if one was hetero and one was homo

50% homo
50% hetero

if bother were homo

100% homo

No brain fart - 25% is correct...

I'm not very knowledgeable in genetics but I thought of this article I saw recently.

An international team led by researchers at Uppsala University in Sweden has identified the genetic mutation that makes gray horses turn gray. They have also shown that these horses carry an identical mutation that can be traced back to a common ancestor that lived thousands of years ago.

If we didn't know what color the colt was yet - then yes, it would be 25% homozygous, 50% heterozygous, and 25% colored (assuming each parent is heterozygous).

However, since we already know the colt is grey from the first post - we know he has one grey gene for sure. So the original poster is correct - 50% chance he inherited the 2nd grey gene from the other parent unless one was homozygous - then that % chance goes up a bit.
