Question Mare Carrying Dead Foal?

My neighbor's mare was exposed to a stud horse summer before this past one. They have been in constant wonder ever since. To make a long story short, I have not felt she was. She just was not showing the signs of a mare in foal during the last stages. Lately, however, she has taken on a very strange drop bellied shape...not at all like a mare in her 12th month, which is what she would be in at this time. The mare looks awful, very thin and lethargic, but with this strange hanging belly. Also, you can express a milky substance from her.

My fear is that there may be an aborted underdeveloped foal in there that the mare has not yet expelled. Could this be possible?

I would have no clue...but sounds not good.

Can you get a vet out?

Sounds like something is not right!

Get a vet out asap. If it is a dead fetus, poisons are being released into the mares bloodstream.

What are signs/symptoms of a mare that has aborted in the 12th month but not delivered? Are there ever times when labor has to be induced?

Exactly what I was thinking. Kinda like when a female aborts a baby, they need a D/C to ri of everything.

You need to get a vet out ASAP. She is lethargic b/c she is probly being posioned by the dead fetus.

Keep us updated, this doesn't sound good.

So the mare was never checked to see if she was in foal? Hope the vet can come out ASAP so they dont lose the mare. Pretty scary and sad for the mare

very possible my uncle had one that was in foal and after the 12th month he had the vet out to check and found out the mare was caring a dead foal so the vet induced labour. I never saw the foal but my uncle said it was starting to rot in side her so I'd tell them to have a vet out asap if its not a dead foal theres deffinatly something wrong

My mare is vet checked in foal and due on the 15th of August. She is showing no signs of pregnancy, no enlargement of the udder ( I do think the milk veins might be swollen) her stomach is bigger but could be a grass belly. We are a little worried that she might have slipped the foal after the check. I checked with my vet today and he stated a mare could carry a full year and even over that by two weeks, He also said if the foal were to miscarry at this stage and not be delivered that I would know in a matter of hours because of how sick my mare would be. If this mare appears ill I would call a vet asap.

We have had mares induced that lost a foal - both to clean them out when they delivered a still born, as well as to deliver the still born..

We also had one that went almost 13 months.. the vet checked her twice, and induced the second time (the foal was still alive and viable on the first check..) - she delivered a healhy baby boy..

The important thing is to have the vet out to check her.. see what he says - and go from there..
