Overo gene?

I was reading threads about solid horses throwing color. So I was wondering about the overo gene. I know you can't test for it and I am aware of lethal white (which you can test for). I have a solid paint. Sire is overo and dam is tobiano. So could she hide the overo gene?

Your overo classifiaction can be 3 different patterns, or a combo of them{Frame,Sabino or Splash}.You can test for OLWS which will tell you if they are carrying the frame overo Gene.There is sabino testing as well.No test for splash that i'm aware. do you have pics of the horse. Some sutble signs in there markings can point to which overo genes may be present.

If I'm correct than yes they can carry the gene just not show it. I have a tovero mare and a solid baby that only has a lip paint mark that is supposedly sabion. I've sent in the hair sample to test what the solid filly is carring. That is the best way to find out.

I may have her tested if I ever want to breed her but I was just curious if that was even a possibility

If I was to guess if any, she carries sabino. Yes SPB{breeding stocks} can carry OLWS{frame gene} I have known a couple that have tested positive. I would say your girl is negative for frame,but testing would be only TRUE way of knowing,if I was to breed her I would be testing.I test all my breeding horses for OLWS,I have predicted there results prior but I didn't want to find out the hard way I guessed wrong
The stockings that come to a point in front is more a sabino trait they & generally more rough edged.Splash also likes to put white on legs but stockings more straight & crisp edged.The frame & splash tend to put more white on face in form of bigger blazes.Sabino likes to mark the muzzle,lips,chin & underside of jaw.If they get blue in eyes those are either from frame or splash.

I don't plan to breed her anytime soon but I was talking with the people I bought her frome and her half sister has had a OWLS foal. So I will definately test before breeding. Thanks!

Just because her sister had a olws baby doesn't mean it came from the mare it could have came from sire.Also was her sister also a breeding stock or colored? siblings can test differently depending on what genes they inherited from each parent.Each breeding the genes passed on aren't always the same .

It doesn't matter if the half-sister is breeding stock or colored. Any horse suspected of carrying a "paint" gene should in good conscience be tested before being bred.

It is true that just because her half-sister carries the gene, your mare may not, but it is better to know for sure.

The half sister is a overo. They have the same sire. I know that just because she had an OWLS baby doens't mean Cherokee would but I will have her tested before breeding and will not breed her to any stud that hasn't also been tested.
