What colour is he??

This is Splash -- my 11 month old grade stud (soon to be a gelding). What colour would you call him. I have spent hours looking at sabino websites and that is what I am thinking but would love your opinions. He does have a white belly spot and a small (and I mean about 10-15 hairs) white spot on his neck. I have a picture of the high white's on his hind legs and you can see the "slashes" of colour on the back of his front lets . . . . . so, please, when I am trying to describe his colour -- what is it??

His tail has 3 colours in it -- the light colour around the edges, the darker red in the middle and under the dark red he has black.

I don't have a picture of his belly spot -- he came to me as unhandled and I haven't been brave enough to take a good look at his belly yet. I know the spot is there because when he was being broke to lead he reared up twice and I saw the white .

He looks like a flaxen sorrel paint to me. Very pretty, unique markings especially around that front leg!!!! He looks very sweet and has a kin eye. I can see the belly spot from the last pic.... Just a little bit.

He is a little sweetie, but not afraid of much so far. He's got an attitude which is why he is being gelded sooner, rather than later. I was thinking he had some paint in him with the high white on his hind legs, but didn't think he has enough white in him to be referred to as a paint

I'd say a minimally marked paint. What type I'm not sure about that.

He would be a minimally marked sorrel sabino overo. He would easily make a regular registry as far as amount of white needed. Cute colt BTW.

Def a sorrel/flaxen. I love his markings, as for the sab part I have no idea. I'm not really a 'paint' person ..

I just love his markings though!

He can't be registered b/c I don't really know who his parents are and they were definitely not registered either. He's a grade, unless I want to go to the pinto registry.

You may still be able to register him in the Pinto registry, if you want to. It is a fairly large registry. You are right you can not register him Paint, as that registry only registers, Paints, or cropout Quarter horses.

The white under the chin is a good sabino indicator. You could always have him color tested, and sabino is one they can verify.

Paint registry does not register crop out paints anymore. paints have to have one Paint parent and the other may be QH/Tbred or Paint.

I agree Sorrel Sabino with flaxen main and tail. The white on the bottom lip is a good sabino indicator as well as the white on the legs ending in a "point" is a sabino indicator according to the color website I read. I'm not sure if being a sabino makes him a pinto or not but the white on his belly could just be an expression of the sabino gene rather than a pinto spot. Get ready for a lot of color changes, I had a young sabino mare for a while and everytime she shed or grew a winter coat the amount of white in her coat would change. Usually you will see the white hairs spread out from the flank area, and as I said before you'll see the most change at shedding time.
