Another dumb question...

Can a mare go through a false pregnancy when another mare is pregnant?

The mare I am talking about is Atty, my Arabian mare. She was checked last October and the vet said she was not pregnant. Today I was checking Bella who is pregnant and while looking down, Atty walked by and she had a medium size bag, huge milk veins...so I went up to her and was rubbing her all over and when I got to her backside, it felt real loose compared to Bella's. The vet is coming out tomorrow to check on them both.

A little history on Atty. She is 20 years old, has had 3 foals in the past, but no foals in the last 6 years.

I hope that she isn't pregnant as she received no shots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have pics but my computer is acting stupid and won't let me find them to upload to photobucket.

We had an appy mare that had a false prego. She got HUGE! Everyone thought for sure she'd have twins, she bagged up and was even leaking milk, but when checked by the vet, she was not bred and she never foaled...

Horses are massive hormone producers (that's why Premarin worked) so it's very possible that a herdmate's body will respond to the hormones given off by a pregnant mare.

I had a mare last year that showed every sign of being in foal-even had a foal at her side (til I realised she had stole it).

But you know what-vets can miss pregnancies-they do ALL the time lol.

It's actually fairly common. I once bought a mare out of a horrible situation where she was in with three studs. She was bagged up and looked like she was going to burst, but when the vet came out and checked her out, she said she wasn't bred. Eventually she went back to normal, and I was actually glad because only one of the studs was even semi decent looking.

I had a mare that went through a false pregnancy while she was around others mares and a gelding. She had a large bag, milk, and was huge. Never foaled. When I sold her that new owners had a stud and then she stayed in non-stop heat!

We had a mare that bagged up every spring and even dripped "something", but our vet said that spring grass can cause this by affecting hormone production.

Here is Atty's udders. I can crawl under her to take pics but not Bella.

Yesterday the right side of the pic was swollen up but today both sides are bigger than yesterday. The vet will be here around 3.
