Baby Colt's Penis

I have never had a newborn colt before. All my mares had fillies. The colts I've bought have been weaning age, so I'm at a loss whether this is normal or not?

Quincy's penis seems to be always extended and flopping around. It doesn't seem to bother him. Is this how colts start out and then they learn to retract it? It doresn't look abnormal or swollen or injured, it's just hanging free.

For those of you who are breeders and have had a lot of colts, can you offer any advice?

This is perfectly normal. As he gets older, he will learn to retract it. No problem.

This is not limited to colts/equines, scientific research has shown that males of several mammal species appear to have difficulty keeping their penis's retracted and, in fact, prefer to leave them hanging out.

Possum is the only one this year that is that way - and after about 2 weeks he has learned to keep it tucked away

Yep, normal...Some are able to retract it from birth and others take a week or two. No worries!

And then there's that one certain mammal that is incapable of retraction, and quite proud of it.

If I remember right it is due to relaxed muscles. With practice he will keep it where it belongs. My recent colt hasn't shown me his...yet
