Possibilities...

I was just sitting here thinking about what my filly could produce with this stud.. (I Love him!) I will admit, I don't know much about color genes and what not so that is why I'm turning to you guys. Of course my girl isn't going to be up for breeding in quite a while, but still I'd like to know what I might get if I did eventually breed him & her.

His name is Magnum Fleet - Dun Overo Stallion
Sire - Mr Norfleet APHA
Dam - Ginger Dee Bar APHA
Produces 80% Color - Black & White / Grullo & White / Dun & White

Some of his 'get' .....

And my filly..
APHA Breeders Stock - Black w/3 white socks & a blaze

Dam - http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/missy+step+too - APHA Solid coloring just like my filly...

Sire - http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/dark+chocolate+twist - APHA Solid Chestnut

On her dam's side she has a lot of paints with the same overo pattern/coloring as Magnum... her sire's side are mostly solids (the majority being QHs)

My filly & her momma...

Do you think I would most likely get a solid? Colored like him? Black? Grullo? I'm in the dark here.. lol Sorry about so many pictures, I'm just trying to get a better idea here... what do you guys think?

WOW and more wow

I'm afraid I can't be of any help on the color question. The only thing I can think of, would be to find out how many Painted babies he gets out of solid mares...
But looking at those pictures, I'm just about ready to go out and buy a Paint broodmare Jeez, those horses are just beautiful....

JMO: Go for it, when she's older of course

One of my friends have a daughter of Magnum Fleet. I have ridden her and she is very nice. Smart and does very well in WP and horsemanship. She is a big mare and could be shown halter as well. They love Magnum Fleet horses. She looks just like him.

Yes he produces some goegeous big babies! I love his coloring, build, and his disposition is great... and to top it all off he resides not even an hour away from me! Hopefully he is still up for stud when my girl grows up!

i''m thinking you could get a chestnut or black solid color with or without the pattern.
also you'd have a 50% chance of getting a dun since he carries the dun gene
i'm wondering where the grullo would come from, not sure on that, since i thought grullo was a modified color and this stallion doesn't "look" like he'd carry that gene..maybe he's got it from somewhere down the linage and he inherited it and can pass it on?

if he throws grullos, that opens up the color options more since you have a black
also looking at the fillly's lineage, i can't tell what the quarter horse colors were on the dam or sire side, that could possibly change things to.
I also wondered(someone correct me if i have misunderstood) the way paint genetics are but i thought if they had overo in the lineage they could carry it but not express it and so i've noticed she has some overos in her lineage, she could carry an overo gene and pass it on if bred to an overo possibly produce a lethal white?
edited because i had misread the original post & therefore posted something incorrectly

Okay, we know he's homozygous red,
and we know your filliy is heterozygous red (one red parent, and she is black).

A) You could get red or black based babies, 50/50 shot,
depending on which gene your girl passes.

B) Dun Factor adds more potential.
I see you said he's produced a black.
That means he's heterozygous for the dun,
and at least heterozygous for the agouti gene.
Dunno if he completely doesn't carry it or not.

SO if he carries agouti:
25% Red
25% Red Dun
12.5% Black
12.5% Grullo / Grulla
12.5% Bay
12.5% Bay Dun

If he doesn't:
25% Red
25% Red Dun
25% Black
25% Grullo/Grulla

Then factor in that 50/50 shot of any of the paint genes
on one of the above colors...

I must ask, since he is overo,
and your filly has overo in the background,
what are the OLWS results?

He is neg., but my filly..? I'd think she would be negative since her parents have never had any trouble producing, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. She will be getting tested soon enough...good question though.

Even if your mare is positive-she will not produce a lethal from this mating. Both sire and dam must pass the gene.
