Doesn't the foal heat usually only last 2-3 days My Mare went into her foal heat on Tuesday. Today is Monday and when I was breeding another mare this moring she was displaying still. Winking, Squating the whole nine yards. Isn't this kind of unususal. I have never seen a mare run so long in her foal heat.
Does she usually have a long heat? Does she show signs of heat even when she's not in? My mares heats range from about 3 days to 10 days, and most of them will breed whether in heat or not. I'm not going to tell you the word I call those girls! I wouldn't worry too much about the length of the heat, though.
THis could be a normal pattern, or it could be a sign that something isn't right with your mare. Hormone issues can be a sign of an internal issue, such an infection or that she didn't clean out properly after foaling.
I'd say the odds are it is fine, just that your mare is in heat longer than the norm, but if you want to make sure she will be ok to breed in her first true heat, I'd get the vet out to be safe.
I am not sure if she normally has long heats or not. She was prego when I bought her. She passed the placenta whole and hasn't had any swelling or discharge. This was her 3rd foal. Everything went perfect. Hopefully she is just long.
