WB stallions

I am getting a mare on lease next spring and have just started looking at stallions for her. I don't have any pictures of her at the moment but will soon.

Anyways here are a few I am considering...

http://www.wolfrunfarm.com/WRF113.htm

I actually like both stallions on this page. But I don't think they are selling semen for the second guy. I don't know what the market is for a spotty WB but I like the look of the bottom stallion

opinions?

Looking at some of the offspring of the Knabstrupper, if my wonderful lease mare was also a good color match, I'd go for the spotted boy!!

The Knabstrupper stallion died a couple years ago.

actually both stallions on the second website are deceased. They have frozen semen for the cremello but I don't know if they have it for the Knabstrupper stallion.

I guess my questions for you would be, what breed of mare is she? What are her strong points and where does she need help?

What are you hoping to do with the foal? Is the foal a keeper or are you breeding for the commercial market?

As Knapstruppers are notoriously fickle with throwing their spots, would you be happy with a plain foal with NO spots at all? The Knapstruppers can tend to be quite unrefined as well so you will need a more elegant looking mare to counteract that as well

What registry do you want the foal registered in? Will the mare be approved in that registry as well?

Are you aware of the CEM regulations and limitations on semen coming in from the States (and I believe frozen would apply as well)

Do you have a vet that is VERY well versed in using frozen semen? Its a whole nuther ballgame entirely and unless the vet is very well versed in the protocols with using it, breeding with frozen can be very frustrating

Do you have deep pockets (and I am truly not kidding here ...) To successfully breed with frozen, you need to ultrasound sometimes up to 3 times in ONE day to pinpoint ovulation to time it just right. Are you aware that most frozen breedings are pre insemination dose so if your mare doesnt catch, you pay for the semen all over again. Have you looked into shipping costs for the dry shipper necessary to ship the frozen straws in? It can be horrendously expensive to do so. Do you have a dry shipper you can use or borrow? or does your vet?

Very honestly, I know of several breeders that were ready to pull their hair out as they were up to $3000.00 - $5000.00 - $7000.00 for the season, it was July, their mare was STILL open and they didnt know if they should call it quits or keep on trying so be very aware before you go into breeding with frozen what the pitfalls might be, as there are many of them out there and they can put you in the poor house in a hurry ...

Good luck in your decision!

The mare is a Belgian WB/TB mare she is pretty refined, and stands 16.3.

I don't really plan to breed to a knabstrupper I just seen that stallion on Mascarpones page.

And no I honestly haven't looked into the cost for inseminating with frozen semen. I have just started looking into everything.

But thanks for your help

There are so many wonderful stallions available with fresh cooled semen and that is generally pretty idiot proof to use and 99% of the vets are familiar with using it, so that would be my recommendation for you. And if you are looking for a jumper bred WB stallion we have some pretty wonderful candidates available in Canada right now so you wont have the CEM issues to deal with at all

Check out the Balou son - Banderas - standing out west. He is mind bogglingly fabulous!!!

Thanks and I will.

I have just started to look for stallions so have lots of time to figure out what will cross best on the mare.

Have you considered an Andalusian? They are very athletic and the crosses make great event horses. You can also have them registered as Half-Andalusians with IALHA. I have a great stallion that you can check out @ www.vqfarm.net, or ask muttduck, she knows the stallion.
