Question mystery

I bought a mare from the auction house on sept. 17 2009 and thought she was pregnant. I was contacted by the old owners at my request and was told she was checked one week prior to the auction and was said not to be. She continues to show many signs that she is including tonights shock. I looked at her teets when we first got her and they looked like a typical maiden mare teets with just barely a nipple. Tonight they were quite distended and now look like she is developing bags but not swelling with milk yet. Otherwise there is much more than just a nipple . They are hanging down . I dont know how to tell for sure she is pregnant. Can people have false horse pregnancy signs lol.

Have her vet checked. If she is indeed bred, you need to know it.

Yes...whenever we get a horse from a auction...no matter what we always have a vet out to look them over. Its just a precaution we take. Your vet can tell you for sure if she is or not...or there maybe something else that is going on...so I would def suggest a vet out.
In the meantime...can we get pictures!!!

Yep, definitely get her checked by a vet sooner rather than later. If she is in foal, you need to know it.

I'd love to see pictures of her, and by the way, welcome to HT!!

Mares can definitely have false pregnancies, some quite convincing. Just ask "Livingthedream" with the drama queen named Barbie.

Yes - Barbie had us ALL fooled. Poor girl. *hugs livingthedream*
False pregnancies are possible, as are hormonal fluctuations during cycles to cause minor teat swelling.

I'd have a palpation done on her. If she is pregnant, and far enough to be bagging, then the vet should be able to feel something in there, if there's something to feel. That way you know whether to get a foaling kit prepped and start setting that alarm clock for all night checks.

Is that her in your avatar? And I've also heard of false pregnancies in horses. Maybe it's a hormone imbalance?

I wouldn't doubt it if you got her from an auction, best to get it checked out!

I had a mare get vet checked once because we had bought a stud horse at auction (we planned on gelding him and reselling him after he was broke) get out with the mares, well the vet said she was "definately open" only to have her have a foal.........so....I still have him too...LOL
