Question Pedigree

When researching a youngsters pedigree, what are some good resources to find info on the sire and dam? What kind of things should you look at, and how far back in their history is truly applicable to them?

The best place to start with is the breed registry to which they belong - AQHA, APHA, etc. There is usually a small fee for an extended pedigree (AQHA charges $3 for a simple one). If you don't have a membership maybe someone will look it up for you. You can also look on www.allbreedpedigree.com many horses, but not all, are listed there. You can google their names and alot of the time they will come up somewhere - a website, a sale catalog, etc.

We look at the sire and dam and weigh what they have done the heaviest. To us that means the most and will have an impact on the foals price and possible ability. Then we take into consideration grandsires and granddams. They might help influence our decision on a youngster in the event that sire or dam was injured or for some reason did not do anything but we do not base the foals worth or future on one really awesome grandsire/dam. I like to know what is farther back in their pedigrees, but don't necessarily base what they can do or how much they might be worth on anything any farther back than grandsire/dams.

Have to be careful with allbreed though... It IS open and anyone can change information. 99% of the time it is right, but people HAVE been known to go in and change things...

In addition to what's been offered already- I also find just googling helps to- when looking into certain sires/dams and being unable to find much info on them directly through current owner- often times I have found personal ranch sites that references that same sire, his work accomplished and what not.

I was taught for a long time that the first three generations mean the most- past that it's just history. But- I do beg to differ a little- I have noticed on a few horses I've had that they exhibited temperament/ability not so much as their closer generations but rather showed more like the 4 or 5th generation's temperament/ability. So, it's all in the mix- any and all.
