Sorry I lost my photos when my computer crashed last week, I will get some more this week. I hope to be on her this weekend..

AQHA is having a special right now. For transfer and registering them. I would jump on it.

Very good! I think you will be happier having them and it secures the future of the horse....plus, if you plan on showing her...it wont limit you to what shows you can do and its just the responsible horse owner thing to do IMO

Thank you, Like I said she had a saddle on for only 1 week, she had a week of ground then a week under saddle, So I was nervous, She was 2 in this photo. I will get more soon and I am really thinking about showing or doing some sort of competition just not sure. was approached about doing Reining, and WP. Only with WP I would have to cut her mane down and I love long manes.. Thought about penning but in MI, not much of that. Ropin lots of that though. I tried it and caught..... myself. I will post more soon..

Your horse is gorgeous. I love her coloring. I'm glad that you are going to try to get her registered. I am also in favor of registering. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against a good grade horse, but as so many have already stated, it increases your horse's value if they are registered, and it may be the extra little something they need to ensure they go to a good home in case something happens on down the line and she must be sold.

We bought my husband's horse as an unregistered 3 year old. She had papers so that she could be registered with the APHA, but no one had ever bothered to actually get her registered, and by the time we got her it was going to cost us around $1,000 to register her. Fortunately the APHA is running a registration incentive program right now (and fortunately for you it sounds like the AQHA is doing that right now too), so I was finally able to register her (she's now a 6 year old). Her registration just came in the mail Saturday! We have no plans to show her or breed her, but I jumped on the chance to get her registered for a couple of reasons: 1. proof of ownership, and 2. to increase her value and help protect her future in case she should ever need to be sold in the future (which we currently have no plans of doing). Plus, it is fun to check out their lines.

I agree with registering her and like Terry said Proof of ownership even if you don't show or breed its one thing to be able idenify her if she gets lost and to have proof in paperwork with your name as owner this is also helpful in a dispute of some kind or if the horse is stolen or lost. Not to mention added value we can never be sure of our futures.

In case anyone has one that reads this thread I figured I would throw in that right now the ApHC is also doing an Aged Horse incentive as well, $150 for a horse with known pedigree and all the paperwork in order. They have this price till March 31, 2010.
Also if you happen to find a non-registered Appaloosa gelding, or Appaloosa stallion that you geld, if you have no record of its ancestry, but it is obvious that it is Appaloosa and has no Paint, then it can be hardshipped in for $100. That is their normal rate for that. This Year's National Champion in Novice Non-Pro Western Horsemanship is a Unknown/Unknown hardshipped in gelding.

I am also for registration papers..
As for needing them to compete though they are not always needed.. it all depends on the level you plan on showing at.. Obviously breed association approved shows will only allow registered horses.. but most other discipline associtation do not required registered horses.. for example local clubs and afffilistes in my area:

Anyone can compete in The Gem State Stock Horse Associations shows.. for reined cowhorses.. which is an affiliate of NRCHA. here is an excerpt from NRCHA rules
quote
"1.1.4 All registered horses must be shown under the name
assigned to them by their Breed Association, and all unregistered
horses must be shown under one name only, and said name may
not conflict with a registered horse’s name, at any and all contests
approved by the NRCHA. In any NRCHA class, competition
must be open to any horse, regardless of breed, color, conformation,
appearance or previous performance, except in Youth
classes where stallions are prohibited. All horses must be ridden
astride."

Snake River Reining Alliance is open to anyone.. they are an affiliate of NRHA which is open to any horse..

Boise Valley Cutting Horse Associations is open to all breeds as is (I believe, the NCHA)

Even USEF has classes for any horse..

Definitely register if it's an option.

Also, do your best to make sure that any registered horse you buy in the future is transfered into your name, it's a huge pain if you don't bother.

I would definitely have the registration done on her. It is not only proof of ownership, it is also proof of her pedigree. I like to know a horses pedigree so I will know if there is the chance of any diseases (HYPP, HERDA, etc), also for selling purposes so they could see her true pedigree. If you should ever end up selling her, having her registered can help sell her as many (not all) prospective buyers want to see registration papers on a horse.
