Embryo Transfers

Has anyone here done a ET with any of their mares. I would like to breed my mare again next year, but my niece is using her for 4-H, my sister is using her for showmanship and speed classes, and we are going to try to teach her reining and let my nephew try that with her at some local shows. So breeding her would prevent us from using her the way we plan. But if we did a ET, we could still use her and I could get another baby out of her. Her first baby will be two next year and we will really begin the ground work with her so we can start her under saddle training after she turns three. So if I take my mare away that prevents them from being able to show at all, as all the other horses we have either have injuries resulting in limited riding, or are not broke good enough to teach the nephew how to ride.

What are the costs for ET, if you supply the recipient mare or if you use one from the breeding facility. I read that you should have at least two recipient mares in case one is not ready at the same time as the donor mare. I also read that the recipient mare should be 4-12 yrs old. Has anyone tried it with an older mare?

Thanks in advance for any information

I don't have any personal experience with ET, but I have had family members look into it. This site - http://www.raraequus.com/articles/em...nsfer_cost.htm - gave a pretty good idea of some of the costs invovled.

And of course everything is going to vary by location, vet and what needs to be done with your specific horses.

Good luck!

This place is right down the road from me and I have been there several times.

A year or so ago they did have several horses die due to toxic hay...but maybe the site will have some useful info.
