Thumbs up Skittles Final Foal. It's a GIRL!

Last year a lot of not good things happened at my farm resulting in ALL of my horses becoming very underweight, sick, and what not. I do not want to go into the whole thing. But I had to fire my SM. And lost a great friend that turned evil. She knew she was going to get fired, but I kept giving her "just one more chance" Well, all them had gotten worms terribly and had the bellies to prove it. I have been treating them and feeding them, etc. But now for the worst part! Upon a closer inspection of my 22 year old Halflinger mare who was just not putting weight on, I discovered that she most defiantly may be/is PREGNANT!! . I've had enough bred mares to know prego when I see it in person. But since the vet can not be here till Friday to confirm it. I'm using the words "may be". This is NOT something I would EVER have done to this mare! She has a bad back. We have MANY reasons to believe my X-SM bred her out of spite. I know when the stallion, who has been sold, left the property. (1 week after my X-SM) So if she is pregnant, she is at least 9 months along. Vet said if she is indeed pregnant she will have to go full term and deliver, or I can put her down.. She is really bad shape right now. But she is getting 1 scoop Equine Sr. Feed, 1/2 scoop oats, 1/2 cup re-hydrated Beet Pulp, and 2cups Calf Mana a day. She had her teeth done in Sept. Here is a picture I took of her last week. I just want to cry every time I see her! I rub her and tell her how sorry I am, and that I love her. I just hope the vet can give some kind of positive news. She had a foal last year, but when we had bred her we were going by the age the seller gave us (16 - 18). 2 months after foaling when she got her teeth done the dentist told us she was 21 to 25!!!!! I do feel like this is my fault for not noticing it sooner. But I though it was just worms and past baby weight . I feel sooooo stupid. I did not post on this earlier because I was afraid of having a fruit cocktail of fury(sp) thrown at me.

Poor old girl. I bet she was a beautie in her hayday. Doesn't look like a Haffie to me, though. Praying for a healthy momma and a healthy foal.

Her sire was a registared Halflinger, her dam was a halflinger/quarter pony/paint/arib mutt. But this mare was a real good barrel horse in her day. Her is picture from the summer I got her. She is on the left. Satteenna (RIP) is on the left.

Oh my goodness, what a sad situation. I guess you would be fuming. Well, if she were mine I'd start loading her up on the groceries, get her teeth done, and get her on a good deworming program, I'm sure you already know all this though, just putting it out there. I wish you the best of luck with her! Prayers for a safe delivery and healthy mom and baby. Keep us posted.

He's nice looking, other than his pasterns ... hopefully it's a bad trim job, how he's standing, or that particular photo . If that's how they actually are, hopefully the foal won't inherit them . Anyhow, one things for sure - the baby will be a Pinto .

Don't beat yourself up too badly if you had nothing to do with her being bred, just do the best you possibly can for her from this point on . She needs some weight and extra maintenance, but I really don't think she looks like she should be put down . Let us know what the vet says, and I hope the mare and foal will both be okay...

Hope all goes well. Best Wishes Sent. I don't think anyone would be mad. Sometimes things happen that are out of our control and at least you fixed the problem.

What a shame. I agree, though, that for her age, the mother-to-be looks good! Good luck with the vet, and best wishes for a happy and healthy mom and baby.

Good luck, I sure hope you have a good vet on speed dial.

Is there any reason she's getting so little for feed? If she were mine I'd have her on at least 3x that amount split into 2-3 feedings. Senior feed can be fed at much higher amounts than that. I'd also trade the Calf Manna for a good Rice Bran supplement like Empower or MaxEGlo that would help her out much more.

If she looks this bad now, I'd hate to have seen what she looked like last fall going into the winter.

I agree with the upping the feed! My mini/shetlands get more then one scoop. Equine Sr is a complete feed and can be fed at higher rations with no problems. Just up it gradually. Her back and hips are really sticking up and the food will go to the foal first so she really needs more feed

Also keep in mind EQuine Sr has beet pulp already in it so I would not give it again seperately. Sometimes when you double up like that on beet pulp they get loose stools

Sending good thoughts

OMGosh!! Alot of prayers are heading your way. What about feeding her alfalfa? I didn't see a mention of any hay rations. If she can't do straight hay...how about the cubes??

Just some ather ideas for you.

I'm with Beth, she needs more food plus all the hay she'll eat. She's thin and she's old but she could look waaaaay worse so take heart and do your best for her and hopefully all will be well. Best of luck to you and to her .
