Building our horses a new shed ~ It's Done!

This used to be a shed before our cribbing queen did her magic

The corrals were built about 30 years ago for cattle, so a lot of what used to work was not only run down, but didn't really work for horses. So we hauled that stuff out too

Bye bye crapies

Plenty of help staking out the place. Its gonna be 20ft deep and 48ft long. The roof is tall enough to allow a bobcat in there to clean it out. It will be about 10ft tall in back and maybe 15ft tall in front.

Then the big moment, the first post hole ~ drum roll, please!

Then it got pretty fun watching the frame go up little by little

There is a lot more cleanup going on too. We actually have room for an arena

hey, Gerald mentioned it first! But for me it just feel so durn good to see the junk getting hauled out and cleaned up.

Its going to get covered in a kind of tan steel with all of the metal edges covered so the horses can't hurt themselves. Range, I remember your horror story!

And the inside will be covered in a non-cribbing material too so no wood will be exposed to horse faces

Looks terriffic, congrats!! It IS exciting to see projects come to fruition..

What are you covering the edges of the metals shhets with , to protect the horses? I always recall that horror story of the sliced hoof as well, and have shied away from metal, even though it is the best product for some applications.

Would be pleased to know there is a solution to the issue. Thanks

I think its a kind of cement board for the inside... can't quite remember what they said they were gonna do on the outside. All I know is that I keep reminding them until now they just go, "I KNOW, I KNOW"

Great pics but I have to admit that when I saw the one with the hole, I thought that the next picture was going to be you taking a soil sample.

That would be one heck of a sample!

Not as much progress on the barn but more and more crappies are being cleaned out so we're getting more pasture to use. I am SO excited!

AND Gerald is getting a buncha 2x8s from work for free! Enough to build the cold storage for his farm equipment that he's been talking about. I told him to make it big enough so he can insulate part of it for his garage to do his mechanic work. He wants to have a heated floor so its not so hard on his old body, poor thing. Maybe he'll get a pit in there for oil changes too! Think that's too much to ask?!

Yup, its a farm, that's how they are BUT Gerald is actually GETTING RID of some of the equipment he no longer uses!!

Getting rid of the 'crappies' has me excited too

This got cleaned up

This got leveled off and those piles are sand for the shed. Those piles are about 10yd of sand which cost $65, that would mean it would take somewhere around $8K for one corral!

Guess that ain't gonna happen

I'm getting such a big kick out of seeing my own pictures posted

I just love how its coming along! A dream come true!!!!

You and me too Doxie! Gerald's brother Glenn is doing most of the building and since there is only one of him he took time off from building the shed to clean up the pastures. It all has to be done. We'd have so much more pasture if there were less crapies. We have room for another corral and an arena. Its just so neet seeing the land show up from underneath the broken buildings and feeders and such.

Congrats Version! I love your "dream come true" statement--I so know what you mean. I bet it's cool to look out and see such an improvement--a shed going up where some old junk was before. You must be grinning from ear to ear (and Gerald is earning some huge sweetie points with this project, isn't he?)

Its sure large enough for all of that, but instead he's going to partition it off for... cattle! Someday he wants to get back into cattle. Not as big as he was and probably feeder calves, but still cattle. Don't quite get how we'll divide up the pasture, but we'll figure it out I guess.
